Mike Bostock created D3.js in 2011 while at Stanford. It became the standard library for web-based data visualization — used by the New York Times (where Bostock worked as a graphics editor), NASA, and thousands of other organizations.

In 2019, he founded Observable to build a collaborative platform for data exploration and visualization. Observable notebooks let teams write JavaScript, query data, and create interactive visualizations — all in a reactive, browser-based environment.

Freemium model. Free tier for public notebooks and individual use.

Observable Teams adds private notebooks, collaboration, and database connections. Enterprise plans add SSO, audit logs, and embedded analytics.

Observable Framework (open source) lets teams build data apps and dashboards that deploy as static sites — a different monetization path through enterprise adoption.

Jupyter and Python dominate the data science notebook space. Observable uses JavaScript, which is less common in data science (though more natural for visualization).

Competing with Hex, Deepnote, and Google Colab for data team adoption.

Sequoia Capital led the Series B. Earlier investors include Acrew Capital and Netlify co-founder’s fund.
