Ryan Dahl created Node.js in 2009. It revolutionized web development by letting developers use JavaScript on the server side.

But as Node grew, Dahl became increasingly frustrated with decisions he’d made — the module system (require), the lack of security sandboxing, the absence of TypeScript support.

In 2018, he gave a famous talk called "10 Things I Regret About Node.js" and announced Deno — a new runtime built from scratch to address those regrets. The name is an anagram of "Node."

Deno the runtime is open source and free. Deno the company makes money from Deno Deploy — a serverless edge hosting platform.

Developers deploy JavaScript/TypeScript to a global edge network. Pricing is usage-based (requests, compute time, bandwidth).

Think Cloudflare Workers but designed specifically for Deno.

The company also offers Deno KV — a globally distributed key-value database — and Fresh, a web framework.

Node.js has an enormous ecosystem — millions of packages on npm. Deno’s npm compatibility has improved but the ecosystem gap remains.

Convincing companies to migrate from Node.js to Deno requires overcoming massive inertia. Competing with Cloudflare, Vercel, and AWS for edge hosting.

Sequoia Capital led the Series A. Earlier investors include Mozilla Corporation and various angels.

Total funding of approximately $26 million.
