THE ORIGIN STORY
Jarred Sumner was a software engineer frustrated with the JavaScript toolchain. Node.js was slow at starting up.
npm install took forever. Webpack builds dragged.
Every JavaScript project required five separate tools that all did one thing each.
He decided to build everything from scratch — a runtime, package manager, bundler, and test runner — all in one binary, all optimized for raw speed. He chose Zig (a low-level systems language) instead of C++ to build it, squeezing every possible microsecond out of the runtime.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
Bun the runtime is open source and free. The company (Oven) plans to monetize through cloud services — hosting and deployment platform for Bun applications.
The model mirrors Deno Deploy and Vercel: give away the runtime, charge for the cloud infrastructure.

THE HARD PART
Node.js compatibility. Bun aims to be a drop-in replacement for Node.js but achieving 100% compatibility is extremely difficult.
Enterprise adoption requires stability and ecosystem maturity that takes years to build. Monetization through cloud services puts Bun against Vercel, AWS, and Cloudflare.
