Endel did something genuinely clever: it made a product that responds to you rather than plays at you. The 2019 Warner Music deal — a major label signing an AI as a recording artist — was audacious marketing and it worked. The functional audio thesis is real: audio engineered to measurably improve focus or sleep is a different product from a playlist. The Mercedes-Benz and Amazon Alexa partnerships prove the enterprise licensing model. Whether Endel gets there as a platform before someone with Spotify or Apple's scale copies the model is the open question.

endel.ioTHE ORIGIN STORY
Oleg Stavitsky and his co-founders were working at the intersection of music and technology in Berlin in 2018. The core insight was that music created for entertainment has entirely the wrong energy for work and sleep — it distracts.
They hypothesized that generative audio, adapting in real-time to your heart rate, location, time of day, and weather, could produce measurably better outcomes than any static playlist. They built the algorithm and launched the app.
Then in 2019, Warner Music Group signed Endel as an artist — the first AI to be signed by a major record label — releasing AI-generated soundscape albums on streaming platforms. The story went global.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
B2C subscription: monthly or annual access to personalized AI-generated soundscapes on iOS, Android, Apple Watch, and Apple TV. B2B licensing: the Endel engine is licensed to automotive companies (Mercedes-Benz), fitness apps, games, and smart home platforms.
The real long-term business is the licensing model — embedding functional audio generation into third-party products and platforms, not just running a consumer app against Spotify.
THE PRODUCTS
Endel App: personalized AI soundscapes for focus, relaxation, and sleep on iOS, Android, and Apple Watch. Endel for Mercedes-Benz: integrated generative audio in Mercedes-Benz vehicles, adapting to driving conditions and passenger preferences.
Endel x Amazon Alexa: voice-activated soundscape generation on Alexa-enabled devices. Warner Music partnership albums: AI-generated artist releases on Spotify, Apple Music, and major streaming platforms.
HOW THEY GREW
Move beyond app into infrastructure. License the Endel audio engine to car manufacturers, gaming studios, corporate wellness programs, and smart device ecosystems.
Position functional audio — audio with a measurable outcome — as a distinct category from entertainment audio, where Spotify is impossible to compete with. Build the brand around science-backed results rather than music taste.
THE HARD PART
Building a sustainable subscription business when Spotify's ambient playlists are free and Apple Music comes bundled with the device. The consumer app generates real revenue but the addressable market is small compared to general music streaming.
Enterprise licensing is the path to scale but it is a slow, relationship-driven business with long sales cycles. Also: the AI artist positioning created a media moment in 2019, but the novelty has largely worn off.
