Enphase Energy makes the tiny boxes that turn your rooftop solar panels from expensive decorations into actual power plants. They invented the microinverter — a device the size of a paperback book that converts solar energy panel by panel instead of all at once — and it worked so well they went from near-bankruptcy to a $25 billion market cap. The unsung hero of the solar revolution.

Raghu Belur and Martin Fornage founded Enphase in 2006 after Fornage — a power electronics engineer — realized the solar industry had a fundamental design problem. Traditional solar systems used a single central inverter, meaning if one panel was shaded or dirty, it dragged down the entire array.
Fornage designed a microinverter that let each panel operate independently. The idea was elegant but getting it to market was brutal — they nearly ran out of money multiple times before going public in 2012 at $6 per share.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
Enphase sells microinverters and energy management systems for residential and commercial solar installations. A microinverter is attached to each individual solar panel, converting DC electricity to AC on the spot.
They also sell batteries (IQ Battery) for home energy storage and a software platform (Envoy/IQ Gateway) that monitors and optimizes the entire system. Revenue comes from hardware sales to solar installers and homeowners, plus recurring software fees.
THE PRODUCTS
IQ8 Microinverters, IQ Battery (home energy storage), IQ Gateway (monitoring hub), Enphase App (energy management), EV Charger
HOW THEY GREW
Expand beyond the US into Europe, Australia, and India where rooftop solar adoption is accelerating. Add more products to the home energy ecosystem — batteries, EV chargers, smart panels — so installers buy everything from Enphase.
Move from hardware-only to hardware-plus-software recurring revenue through their energy management platform.
THE HARD PART
Competition from SolarEdge and Chinese manufacturers who offer cheaper alternatives. Enphase's products are premium-priced, and in a commodity-sensitive market, cheaper alternatives constantly threaten market share.
They also face cyclical demand tied to government solar incentives — when subsidies change, the entire residential solar market can swing dramatically.
