Netfigo Verdict
on Gather

Gather built the virtual office people actually wanted during COVID. Instead of another flat video grid, they made a 2D pixel-art world where proximity triggers audio — you walk your avatar over to a colleague and suddenly you're talking. The product went viral in tech circles immediately after launch and pulled in a $26M Series A from Index Ventures in 2021. With offices reopening, the market got harder. But Gather found staying power in events, education, and distributed teams that genuinely don't share a physical office.

THE ORIGIN STORY

Philip Kimyung An and his co-founders were tinkering with remote work tools in early 2020 when COVID made remote work non-optional for millions of people overnight. The insight was simple: Zoom calls killed serendipity.

You could have a meeting but not a hallway conversation. A 2D map with proximity-based audio recreated the informal run-ins that offices depend on.

The MVP launched in a few weeks. Gather went through Y Combinator in Winter 2020, shipped fast, and went viral through word of mouth in startup and gaming communities.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

Freemium SaaS. Free for spaces up to 25 concurrent users.

Paid plans start for larger teams and unlock custom office designs, private spaces, and integrations. Enterprise plans are custom-priced.

Revenue comes disproportionately from companies running virtual HQs, conferences, and education programs.

THE PRODUCTS

Gather virtual office — a 2D pixel-art space where proximity triggers video and audio connections. Gather for events — used for virtual conferences, hackathons, and team off-sites.

Gather for education — virtual classrooms and campus environments used by universities and bootcamps. Custom map builder for designing branded office layouts.

HOW THEY GREW

Almost entirely product-led and word of mouth. Hackathons, virtual conferences, and distributed startup teams discovered Gather and shared it organically.

The product is inherently social — to use it, you invite other people, so every new user is also a distribution event. Gather also became a staple for virtual summer camps, college orientations, and game design communities.

THE HARD PART

Return to office. The original use case — replacing a physical office entirely — weakened as companies mandated in-person days.

Gather has been repositioning around hybrid work and events rather than pure virtual-office replacement. The challenge is that events are lumpy revenue and enterprise virtual offices are a smaller market than 'all remote workers everywhere' turned out to be.
