The internet bank that signed up a million customers in five days — because it was already in an app that 93% of South Korea uses. KakaoBank proved that the best bank distribution channel isn't a branch network, it's a messaging app. With 23 million customers in a country of 52 million, nearly half of South Korea banks with Kakao. That's not a bank — that's infrastructure.

Kakao Corp — the company behind KakaoTalk, South Korea's dominant messaging app — recognized that 47 million Koreans were already using their app for communication. Adding banking was a natural extension.
KakaoBank launched in 2017 and acquired 1 million customers in the first five days. Within two weeks, it had 3 million.
The onboarding was brilliantly simple: open the KakaoTalk app, tap the banking tab, verify your identity with your phone, and you have a bank account in 7 minutes. No branch visits, no paperwork, no waiting.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
Mobile-only digital bank in South Korea. No physical branches — everything happens through the KakaoTalk messaging app (which 93% of South Koreans use).
Revenue comes from net interest income on loans and deposits, fee income from financial product distribution, and data-driven cross-selling. The integration with KakaoTalk gives it a distribution channel that traditional banks can't replicate.
THE PRODUCTS
KakaoBank Accounts (savings and checking with competitive rates), Mini Loans (instant approval personal loans), 26-Week Savings Challenge (gamified savings product), Stock Account (integrated brokerage), Credit Cards, and Kakao Pay integration (seamless payments within the KakaoTalk ecosystem). The 26-Week Savings Challenge — where users commit to saving increasing amounts each week — went viral and attracted millions of participants.
HOW THEY GREW
Ecosystem integration. KakaoBank doesn't compete with traditional banks on rates or branches — it competes on convenience.
Transfer money to friends through KakaoTalk. Get loan approvals in minutes.
Invest in funds without leaving the app. The strategy is to make KakaoBank so embedded in daily digital life that switching away would be inconvenient.
Cross-selling insurance, investment products, and credit cards through the Kakao ecosystem drives revenue per user.
THE HARD PART
Regulatory constraints in South Korea's heavily regulated banking market. KakaoBank needed a full banking license, which required significant capital and regulatory approval.
Traditional Korean banks — powerful, politically connected conglomerates — lobbied against internet-only banking licenses. Interest rate compression in South Korea has also squeezed net interest margins, making profitability harder despite massive customer growth.
