THE ORIGIN STORY
Jan Oberhauser was a developer in Berlin who needed to automate workflows between different tools. Zapier was expensive and too limited for complex automations.
Make (Integromat) was better but still a black box. In 2019, he built n8n as an open-source workflow automation tool.
The key differentiation: n8n is "fair-code" (source-available, self-hostable), supports custom JavaScript/Python within workflows, and lets technical teams build automations that would be impossible on Zapier.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
Open-core model. The core n8n product is free and open-source for self-hosting.
n8n Cloud is the hosted version ($20-$50/month). Enterprise plans add SSO, audit logs, and advanced permissions.

When AI agents became a major trend in 2023-2024, n8n was perfectly positioned — developers needed a tool to chain AI model calls with other actions (APIs, databases, messaging). n8n became the default tool for building AI agent workflows.
THE HARD PART
Zapier has massive brand recognition and a simpler product for non-technical users. n8n is more powerful but requires more technical knowledge.
The challenge is expanding beyond developers to business users who might prefer Zapier's simplicity. Competition from Make, Tray.io, and Microsoft Power Automate is also real.
