Nikita Shamgunov was a co-founder of SingleStore (MemSQL), a high-performance database company. He left to build what he wished existed: a PostgreSQL database that scales to zero, costs nothing when idle, and can be branched like code in a Git repository.
The "database branching" concept was novel — developers have had code branching (git) for decades but database branching for most of history meant painful manual backups. Neon launched in 2022 and was adopted quickly by serverless-native developers, particularly those building on Vercel, Cloudflare Workers, and other edge compute platforms.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
Neon offers serverless PostgreSQL — developers pay based on actual compute time used, not a fixed monthly server cost. A database that processes 1 request per day costs a fraction of one processing 1 million.
Neon also offers a "branching" feature where you can create an instant copy of your database for testing, staging, or development, then throw it away. Revenue comes from usage-based pricing for compute time and storage.

Databricks Ventures' investment signals the potential for Neon to be used in data-intensive AI workloads.
THE HARD PART
The serverless database market has several strong competitors: PlanetScale (MySQL), Turso (SQLite at edge), and the big clouds (AWS Aurora Serverless, Google Cloud Spanner) all compete for the same workloads. Postgres compatibility is a moat — there are hundreds of millions of lines of existing Postgres code — but the competition for the next generation of serverless applications is fierce.
