Neon is a Brazilian digital bank targeting the working class — the millions of Brazilians who earn minimum wage and have been ignored by both traditional banks and the trendy neobanks like Nubank. While Nubank targets the upwardly mobile middle class, Neon focuses on the base of the pyramid: domestic workers, delivery drivers, and informal workers who need basic banking without fees. Over 30 million accounts opened, proving that financial inclusion at the bottom of the pyramid is a business, not just charity.

Pedro Conrade founded Neon in 2016 in São Paulo with a mission to serve the 60+ million Brazilians who were underbanked — people with bank accounts that they barely used because fees ate into their small balances. Neon offered a free digital account, a debit card, and access to financial services (credit, insurance, investments) designed for low-income users.
The product was distributed through physical partnerships (retailers, pharmacies) in addition to digital channels, recognizing that the target audience was not always digital-first.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
Transaction-based revenue and financial product distribution. Neon earns from interchange fees on card transactions, credit products (personal loans, salary advance), insurance distribution, investment products, and marketplace commissions.
The low-income segment generates smaller per-user revenue but the volume is massive.
THE PRODUCTS
Neon Digital Account (free banking). Neon Debit Card.
Salary Advance (credit product). Personal Loans.
Insurance Products. Investment Products.
Neon Shopping (marketplace). Pix integration.
HOW THEY GREW
Physical + digital distribution. Unlike neobanks that are purely digital, Neon distributed through physical retail partnerships — letting people open accounts at pharmacy chains and retail stores.
This strategy reached Brazilians who were not comfortable with purely digital banking. The company also partnered with employers to offer salary accounts.
THE HARD PART
Monetizing low-income users. The per-user revenue from low-income Brazilians is significantly lower than from the middle-class users that Nubank targets.
Neon needs massive scale to make the economics work. Competition from Nubank (which is expanding downmarket), PicPay, and traditional banks improving digital access.
