OBSERVABLE

Netfigo Verdict
on Observable

Mike Bostock created D3.js, the most important data visualization library in the history of the web. Then he founded Observable to build the future of data analysis. Observable notebooks let data teams write code, run queries, and create visualizations in the browser, all connected to live data. It is Jupyter Notebooks meets Google Docs meets the best data visualization ever made. The man who taught the internet how to draw charts is now teaching companies how to think with data.

THE ORIGIN STORY

Mike Bostock created D3.js in 2011 while working at The New York Times. D3 became the standard library for data visualization on the web, used by thousands of companies and media organizations.

Nearly every interactive chart you see on the internet uses D3 or a library built on top of it.

In 2019, Bostock left the Times and founded Observable with Melody Meckfessel (former VP of Engineering at Google). The idea was to build a collaborative platform for data analysis that combined the power of code with the ease of a document.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

Freemium SaaS. Observable offers free notebooks for individuals and open-source projects.

Teams and enterprises pay for private notebooks, collaboration features, database connections, and enterprise security.

Observable Framework, launched in 2024, is an open-source static site generator for data dashboards, creating a new distribution channel for the platform.

THE PRODUCTS

Observable Notebooks are reactive, collaborative documents that combine code, data, and visualization. Observable Plot is a high-level charting library for quick data exploration.

Observable Framework generates static data dashboards from Observable notebooks. D3.js, while separate from Observable the company, powers the visualization layer.

HOW THEY GREW

Bostock's reputation in the data visualization community was the initial growth engine. Observable launched with a built-in audience of D3 users and data journalists.

The product-led growth strategy relies on Observable notebooks being shared publicly, driving awareness. Beautiful, interactive analyses shared on social media attract new users.

THE HARD PART

Competition from Jupyter Notebooks (dominant in data science), Hex (modern notebook for analytics), and Google Colab (free and integrated with Google Cloud). Each has established user bases and ecosystem integrations.

Observable's JavaScript-first approach (versus Python) limits adoption among data scientists who primarily work in Python. The D3 community is largely front-end developers, not the data scientists who typically use notebooks.
