PicPay is what happens when you build Venmo for Brazil and then add everything else. Starting as a peer-to-peer payments app, PicPay grew to 35+ million active users by becoming a financial super-app — payments, banking, crypto, investments, insurance, and e-commerce all in one. In a country where Pix (instant payments) made P2P transfers free, PicPay had to reinvent itself fast. It did — pivoting from payments to financial services before the free government system made its original product irrelevant.

Three friends from Vitória, a mid-sized city in southeastern Brazil, built PicPay in 2012 as a mobile payment app. Brazil's payment infrastructure was fragmented — cash dominated, bank transfers were slow, and most people did not have credit cards.
PicPay let users pay each other, pay bills, and pay at stores using QR codes and their phone. The app grew steadily, then exploded during COVID-19 as contactless payments became essential.
PicPay expanded into banking services, investments, crypto trading, and e-commerce, transforming from a payments app into a financial super-app.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
Multi-revenue fintech. Free P2P payments (revenue from float and ecosystem engagement).
Revenue from credit products (personal loans, credit cards), interchange fees, merchant payment processing, investment product distribution, crypto trading fees, and insurance distribution. The super-app model monetizes the same user across multiple financial products.
THE PRODUCTS
PicPay Payments (P2P and merchant). PicPay Card (credit and debit).
PicPay Investimentos (investment products). PicPay Crypto (cryptocurrency trading).
PicPay Store (e-commerce marketplace). Bill payments and mobile top-ups.
HOW THEY GREW
Super-app strategy in a mobile-first market. PicPay grew by being the easiest way to split bills and pay friends in Brazil.
Once users were on the platform, PicPay cross-sold banking, credit, and investment products. The company spent heavily on marketing — including World Cup sponsorships — to build brand awareness among younger Brazilians.
THE HARD PART
Competition from Nubank (100M+ users), Mercado Pago (Mercado Libre), PagBank, and Brazil's central bank Pix system. Pix, launched in 2020, made instant P2P payments free for everyone — directly threatening PicPay's core product.
The company had to pivot to credit and financial services to maintain relevance.
