SPLIT

Netfigo Verdict
on Split

Split combined feature flags with statistical impact measurement — so engineers could not only release code to 1% of users, but actually know whether that 1% liked it. It was acquired by Harness in 2022. LaunchDarkly got the brand recognition and the valuation. Split got the product sophistication. In the feature flag market, that turned out not to be enough.

THE ORIGIN STORY

Feature flags let engineers deploy code to 1% of users before releasing it to everyone — it is one of the fundamental practices of modern software development. Split was founded to give teams not just feature flags but the statistical analysis layer on top: with Split, you can see not just whether a new feature was rolled out to users, but whether it improved conversion rate, engagement, or any metric you care about.

The combination of feature management plus experimentation analytics was the differentiation. Adil Aijaz was previously at Lending Club and had seen firsthand how feature flag usage without proper measurement was guesswork.

Split made measurement the product.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

Split charges engineering teams a subscription fee based on monthly tracked users and feature usage. It offers a tiered model from a free developer plan up to enterprise contracts with custom pricing for large-scale deployments.

Revenue scales with the size of the customer's user base and the level of analytics sophistication required.

THE PRODUCTS

Split feature flags and experimentation platform, Split Metrics (impact measurement), real-time targeting, gradual rollouts

HOW THEY GREW

Split targeted mid-market and enterprise engineering teams that were already running A/B tests and needed better tooling. It built integrations with major analytics platforms (Amplitude, Mixpanel, Datadog) so engineers could see feature flag data alongside their existing metrics.

The Salesforce Ventures investment helped open enterprise accounts. The company was acquired by Harness (the DevOps platform) in 2022.

THE HARD PART

The feature flag market has a problem: LaunchDarkly arrived earlier and faster and built strong brand recognition. LaunchDarkly raised over $600M at a $3B valuation.

Split's differentiation (built-in experimentation and impact measurement) resonates with data-driven engineering teams but requires more organizational maturity to use. Selling a "measure everything" product requires customers who already know they should be measuring things.
