Jagdeep Singh is a serial entrepreneur — he previously co-founded Infinera (fiber optics, IPO'd at $3B+) and OnMobile. In 2010, he teamed up with Stanford professor Fritz Prinz and PhD student Tim Holme to tackle solid-state batteries.
The fundamental problem: existing lithium-ion batteries use a liquid electrolyte that's flammable, limits energy density, and degrades over time. A solid-state battery replaces the liquid with a solid — theoretically enabling 80% more range, 15-minute charging, and zero fire risk.
Every major battery company has tried and failed. Singh believed Stanford's ceramic separator technology could crack it.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
QuantumScape is developing solid-state lithium-metal batteries. They don't have meaningful revenue yet — the company is pre-commercial.
Future revenue will come from licensing their solid-state battery technology to automotive manufacturers and/or selling battery cells directly. Volkswagen has a joint venture (PowerCo) to manufacture QuantumScape's cells.
The company went public via SPAC in 2020, raising capital to fund continued R&D and eventually manufacturing.

HOW THEY GREW
QuantumScape's strategy is to prove the technology works in the lab, then partner with Volkswagen for manufacturing. VW's PowerCo joint venture is supposed to handle scale production.
QuantumScape focuses purely on R&D and cell design, leaving the hard manufacturing to VW's existing factory infrastructure. They've shipped sample cells to automotive OEMs for testing.
The bet is that once solid-state works, every automaker will want it — giving QuantumScape licensing leverage across the entire industry.
THE HARD PART
The core challenge is manufacturing at scale. QuantumScape has demonstrated promising lab results — their cells show 80% capacity retention after 800 charge cycles.
But going from lab samples to millions of production cells is a chasm that has killed many battery startups. The company has been public since 2020 but has pushed back its commercial timeline repeatedly.
The stock peaked at $132 in December 2020 and has fallen over 90%. Short sellers and skeptics question whether solid-state batteries can ever be manufactured economically at automotive scale.
