Redpanda is Kafka without the pain. Alexander Gallego rebuilt Apache Kafka from scratch in C++, eliminating the JVM, ZooKeeper, and most of the operational complexity that makes Kafka administrators want to cry. The result is a streaming data platform that is 10x faster, uses 6x less memory, and can be deployed in minutes instead of days. It is Kafka-compatible, meaning existing applications work without changes. The pitch is basically: everything you love about Kafka, nothing you hate about it. One hundred percent of the features, zero percent of the therapy bills.

Alexander Gallego was previously the CEO of Vectorized, a company focused on high-performance data processing. He had deep experience with low-latency systems and saw that Apache Kafka, while brilliant in concept, was operationally painful.
Kafka runs on the JVM (Java Virtual Machine), requires ZooKeeper for coordination, and needs careful tuning to perform well. Managing a Kafka cluster at scale requires specialized expertise.
Gallego believed he could rebuild Kafka's core in C++, eliminating the JVM overhead and ZooKeeper dependency.
In 2019, he founded Redpanda (named after the adorable animal, not the temperament of Kafka operators). The first release was fully compatible with the Kafka API, meaning any application built for Kafka would work with Redpanda without code changes.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
Open-source core (Redpanda Community) with a commercial managed cloud service (Redpanda Cloud). Enterprise features like RBAC (role-based access control), Tiered Storage, and Schema Registry are included in the commercial edition.
Redpanda Cloud is the fastest-growing revenue line, offering a fully managed streaming data platform that eliminates operational burden entirely.
THE PRODUCTS
Redpanda is the core streaming data platform. Kafka API-compatible, single binary, no JVM, no ZooKeeper.
Redpanda Cloud is the managed service. Redpanda Console is the web UI for managing topics, consumers, and schemas.
Redpanda Connect (formerly Benthos) is the data integration layer with 200+ connectors.
HOW THEY GREW
The Kafka compatibility was the Trojan horse. Developers could try Redpanda with zero migration effort.
If it was faster and easier, they stayed. The benchmarks drove adoption: 10x faster tail latencies, 6x less memory usage, and single-binary deployment versus Kafka's multi-process architecture.
The developer community grew through GitHub (8,000+ stars), conference talks, and blog posts comparing Redpanda vs Kafka performance.
THE HARD PART
Kafka is deeply entrenched. Confluent (the commercial Kafka company) has thousands of enterprise customers and a strong ecosystem.
Migrating from Kafka to Redpanda, while technically easy, requires organizational buy-in.
Amazon MSK (Managed Streaming for Kafka) is a competitive threat. AWS offering managed Kafka makes the operational pain of self-hosted Kafka less acute.
