CLICKHOUSE

Netfigo Verdict
on ClickHouse

ClickHouse was built inside Yandex (Russia’s Google) to handle the analytics behind the largest search engine in Russia. Then it was open-sourced. Then a company was formed around it and raised $300 million. It’s the fastest analytical database on earth for column-oriented queries — processing billions of rows per second on a single server. Speed isn’t a feature. Speed is the entire product.

THE ORIGIN STORY

Alexey Milovidov developed ClickHouse at Yandex starting in 2009 to power Yandex.Metrica, the second-largest web analytics platform in the world. The challenge was processing tens of billions of events per day for real-time analytics dashboards.

ClickHouse was open-sourced in 2016 and quickly gained a massive following among developers who needed fast analytical queries. In 2021, ClickHouse Inc.

was formed as an independent company with Milovidov and others, raising $300 million to build a managed cloud service.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

Open-source core with a managed cloud service (ClickHouse Cloud). The open-source database is free to self-host.

The cloud service charges based on compute and storage consumption. Enterprise features and support require commercial licenses.

THE PRODUCTS

ClickHouse — open-source columnar analytical database. ClickHouse Cloud — fully managed cloud service.

Real-time analytics processing billions of rows per second. Materialized views for continuous data transformation.

Integration with popular data tools (dbt, Kafka, S3).

HOW THEY GREW

Open-source community growth — ClickHouse has 30,000+ GitHub stars and is used by companies like Uber, eBay, Cloudflare, and Spotify. The managed cloud service targets developers who want ClickHouse speed without operational overhead.

THE HARD PART

Competing with Snowflake, BigQuery, and Databricks in the cloud analytics market. ClickHouse is faster for many workloads but has a steeper learning curve.

The Russia association (Yandex origin) created some geopolitical sensitivity after 2022.
