Richard Jenkins spent 10 years building the world's fastest wind-powered vehicle. In 2009, he broke the land speed record at 126.1 mph on a dry lakebed in Nevada, powered only by wind.
The project taught him everything about wind propulsion engineering. He realized the same principles could create autonomous ocean vehicles that sailed indefinitely without fuel.
In 2012, he founded Saildrone in Alameda, California. The first Saildrones were 23-foot unmanned surface vehicles with a rigid wing sail that could navigate oceans autonomously.
By 2019, Saildrones had circumnavigated Antarctica. NOAA, NASA, and the US Navy became major customers.
The company pivoted from pure ocean science toward defense and maritime domain awareness.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
Saildrone operates a data-as-a-service model. They don't sell drones — they sell the data the drones collect and the surveillance services they provide.
Government agencies (NOAA, NASA, US Navy, Coast Guard) and commercial customers (fishing companies, weather services, insurance firms) pay for ocean data, maritime surveillance, and environmental monitoring. Defense contracts are an increasingly large revenue source, as the Navy uses Saildrones for ISR (intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance) in contested waters.

Saildrone Explorer is the original 23-foot wind and solar powered USV for ocean data collection. Saildrone Voyager is a larger 33-foot platform for deeper ocean missions.
Saildrone Surveyor is the 72-foot defense-focused vessel with multibeam sonar, radar, and AIS. Their mission portal provides real-time data visualization and fleet management.

HOW THEY GREW
Saildrone's growth strategy is platform expansion. They started with small Explorer drones for ocean research, then built larger Voyager drones for deeper ocean work, and now the Surveyor — a 72-foot autonomous vessel for defense applications with sonar, radar, and AIS tracking.
They're scaling fleet size (hundreds of drones) to provide persistent ocean coverage. The defense pivot has been the biggest growth driver, as the US Navy seeks cheap, expendable sensing platforms for the Pacific.
THE HARD PART
Operating autonomous vehicles on the open ocean is inherently dangerous and technically challenging. Drones face storms, shipping traffic, equipment failures, and the corrosive saltwater environment.
Scaling from dozens to hundreds of drones requires massive manufacturing and logistics capability. The defense market is lucrative but comes with long procurement cycles and geopolitical risk.
There's also competition from other autonomous maritime companies and from traditional crewed survey vessels.
