THE ORIGIN STORY

Dino Mavrookas was an engineer and entrepreneur who founded Saronic in 2021 in Austin, Texas. His thesis was that the US Navy needed a new class of autonomous surface vessels — unmanned ships that could conduct surveillance, mine countermeasures, anti-submarine warfare, and logistics without putting sailors in danger.

The Navy had been experimenting with unmanned vessels for years (the Sea Hunter program), but acquisition was slow and the existing defense primes (Lockheed, Raytheon) were not moving fast enough. Mavrookas believed a startup could design, build, and deliver autonomous ships faster and cheaper than traditional defense contractors.

He built a team of robotics engineers, naval architects, and defense experts.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

Saronic sells autonomous surface vessels directly to the US Department of Defense and allied navies. Revenue comes from government contracts for vessel design, manufacturing, and ongoing support.

WHO BACKED THEM
