Signal is the messaging app that refuses to make money. No ads. No data collection. No subscriptions. It is funded by Brian Acton's $50 million donation (the same guy who walked away from $850 million at Facebook over privacy) and user donations. The Signal Protocol encrypts messages so securely that it is used by WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Google — which means Signal's technology protects billions of conversations across its competitors' platforms. Edward Snowden uses it. Every journalist covering national security uses it. The only question: can a nonprofit survive in a world where every other communication platform is a surveillance machine? Signal is the most important app that might not exist in 10 years.

Moxie Marlinspike (a pseudonym — real name Matthew Rosenfeld) is a cryptographer and former head of security at Twitter. He developed the Signal Protocol — the gold standard of end-to-end encryption.
In 2018, Brian Acton (WhatsApp co-founder who left Facebook over privacy disagreements) donated $50 million to co-found the Signal Foundation with Marlinspike. Signal the app evolved from TextSecure, which Marlinspike created in 2010.
Edward Snowden publicly endorsed Signal in 2015, calling it the only messaging app he trusted. Marlinspike stepped down as CEO in January 2022.
Meredith Whittaker, the former Google researcher who helped lead the 2018 Google walkout, has been president since September 2022 and is now the public face of the organisation.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
Signal is a nonprofit encrypted messaging app. It makes zero revenue from advertising, data collection, or subscriptions.
The app is completely free. It is funded entirely by donations, grants, and Brian Acton's $50 million founding gift.
Signal uses the Signal Protocol — the same end-to-end encryption technology that secures WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Google Messages. Signal president Meredith Whittaker says running it costs roughly $50 million a year.
The app has been downloaded hundreds of millions of times.

HOW THEY GREW
Be the default for anyone who cares about privacy. Signal grew dramatically during privacy controversies (WhatsApp policy changes in 2021 drove millions to Signal in a single week).
The strategy: be so trustworthy that privacy-conscious users, journalists, activists, and eventually mainstream users choose Signal by default. Growth comes from crises — every time a competitor betrays user trust, Signal benefits.
THE HARD PART
Sustainability without a business model. Signal refuses to run ads, sell data, or charge subscriptions.
It operates purely on donations. Annual costs are roughly $50 million.
The Signal Foundation has enough runway for several years, but long-term funding is uncertain. Every other messaging app monetizes users somehow.
Signal's commitment to being free and private is admirable — but money is finite and servers are not free.
