Ahti Heinla and Janus Friis co-founded Skype, the video calling service that Microsoft bought for $8.5 billion in 2011. After Skype, they could have retired to a beach.
Instead, they started Starship Technologies in 2014 in Estonia with the goal of making local deliveries autonomous.
The founding insight was that last-mile delivery is absurdly expensive. Sending a human in a car to deliver a $15 lunch order costs more than the food itself.
A small robot that drives on sidewalks and costs pennies per delivery could make local delivery economically viable for everyday items, not just luxury convenience.
Starship started testing in Europe, running pilot programs in London, Tallinn, and Hamburg. The robots were an immediate sensation.
People stopped to take photos. Kids waved at them.
The social media exposure was free marketing worth millions. By 2018, Starship had completed 100,000 deliveries and shifted focus to the US market.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
Starship operates a delivery-as-a-service platform. On college campuses, students order through the Starship app, and a robot delivers the food from campus dining halls and nearby restaurants.
Starship charges a delivery fee per order, typically $1.99-$3.99, significantly cheaper than human delivery.
The campus model is brilliant because it is a controlled environment. College campuses have sidewalks, low-speed traffic, and a concentrated customer base of 20,000+ students who all order food constantly.
Utilization rates are high. Routes are short.
The robots can do 15-20 deliveries per day. At scale across dozens of campuses, the economics work.
THE PRODUCTS
The Starship delivery robot is a six-wheeled autonomous vehicle about the size of a large cooler. It carries up to 20 pounds of cargo.
Navigation uses a combination of cameras, ultrasonic sensors, and GPS. The robots drive on sidewalks at pedestrian speed.
The Starship app is where customers order and track their delivery in real time. You can watch the robot navigate on a map as it approaches.
When it arrives, you unlock the lid with your phone. The whole experience is weirdly delightful the first few times.
The robots have personality. They pause at crosswalks.
They make little beeping sounds. Students treat them like campus pets.
HOW THEY GREW
Starship's growth hack was college campuses. They signed exclusive delivery deals with universities, effectively locking out competitors and creating guaranteed high-volume demand.
Each campus generates thousands of deliveries per week. The company now operates on over 25 university campuses in the US and UK.
The Skype pedigree opened doors. When two Skype co-founders ask for a meeting, people take it.
This helped Starship raise $202 million from investors and negotiate partnerships with food service companies like Sodexo and Aramark, which manage dining on many college campuses.
THE HARD PART
Scaling beyond college campuses is the big question. Campuses are ideal environments: flat, mapped, with friendly users.
Suburban neighborhoods are harder. They have driveways, dogs, sprinklers, uneven sidewalks, and residents who are less amused by robots than college students.
Starship has launched in some suburban markets but the economics are tighter.
Weather is a real constraint. Robots do not handle snow, heavy rain, or extreme heat well.
This limits their usefulness in many US cities for parts of the year. And the robots are slow, about 4 mph.
For any delivery over a mile, the wait time starts to feel unreasonable.

WHO BACKED THEM
TDK Ventures, the venture arm of the Japanese electronics giant, invested in Starship. Morpheus Ventures, Shasta Ventures, and the Founders Fund (Peter Thiel's VC firm) also participated.
The Skype connection brought in early European investors. Airbus Ventures invested, signaling that the aerospace giant sees ground-based autonomous delivery as complementary to its drone ambitions.
Total funding of $202 million gives Starship one of the largest war chests in the delivery robot space.
