SUPABASE

Netfigo Verdict
on Supabase

Supabase is the open-source answer to Google's Firebase, and developers love it. It bundles a real Postgres database with authentication, file storage, instant APIs, and more, so a solo developer can stand up a backend in minutes. Paul Copplestone and Ant Wilson founded it in 2020 and went through Y Combinator that summer. The bet was that developers wanted Firebase's speed without giving up an open standard like Postgres or getting locked into Google. It worked spectacularly. Supabase climbed from a $2 billion valuation to a reported $5 billion in 2025, riding the wave of AI apps that all need a backend fast.

THE ORIGIN STORY

Paul Copplestone was running a software agency and kept reaching for Firebase to build fast, but he hated the lock-in and the closed database underneath. He and Ant Wilson started Supabase in 2020 with a simple idea.

Take Postgres, the most beloved open-source database, and wrap it in the same instant, developer-friendly experience that made Firebase popular. They open-sourced it, joined Y Combinator's summer 2020 batch, and launched to developers who had been waiting for exactly this.

The name is a play on base plus the superpowers they wanted to give Postgres.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

Supabase is open-source and free to self-host, but most people pay Supabase to host and manage it for them. There is a generous free tier, then paid plans that scale with usage, plus enterprise pricing for big teams.

The model mirrors the open-source playbook. The code is free, but running a production database with auth, storage, and backups handled for you is the paid convenience.

Because it is just Postgres underneath, customers can always leave and take their database with them, which paradoxically makes them more willing to stay.

THE PRODUCTS

The core is a managed Postgres database with instant auto-generated APIs. Around it, Supabase bundles authentication, file storage, edge functions for serverless code, real-time subscriptions, and a vector toolkit for AI applications.

The pitch is a complete backend in one place, all open-source, all built on standards developers already trust.

HOW THEY GREW

Supabase grew bottoms-up through developers, not top-down through sales. Being open-source and built on familiar Postgres made it an easy yes for engineers, and a relentless stream of new features kept them.

Its biggest tailwind has been the AI app boom. Every AI startup and every no-code or vibe-coding tool needs a backend with a database, auth, and storage, and Supabase became a default choice, helped by a vector toolkit for AI search built right in.

Growth fed on the explosion of new software being built.

THE HARD PART

Supabase is competing with Google's Firebase, which has enormous reach and Google's distribution behind it, plus the cloud giants' own database services. It also has to keep converting free and self-hosting users into paying customers, the eternal open-source puzzle.

And the sky-high valuation, reportedly $5 billion in 2025, sets expectations the business has to grow into. Riding the AI wave is wonderful until the wave slows, and a lot of that optimism is already priced in.

WHO BACKED THEM

Supabase has raised more than $400 million from major investors who see it as core infrastructure for how software gets built. Coatue led an early Series A in 2021.

Later rounds drew Felicis, Craft Ventures, Peak XV, Y Combinator, and others. A 2024 round valued the company around $2 billion, and a 2025 round reportedly pushed that to $5 billion as AI demand surged.
