THE ORIGIN STORY

Norman Rostoker, a legendary UCLA plasma physicist, spent decades developing the field-reversed configuration (FRC) — a way to contain plasma using the plasma's own magnetic field rather than external magnets. In 1998, he founded TAE (originally Tri Alpha Energy, named for the three alpha particles produced in hydrogen-boron fusion) to commercialize FRC fusion.

The company operated in stealth for over a decade before going public with its research. Google's involvement — using machine learning to optimize plasma containment — accelerated progress dramatically.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

Fusion energy company pursuing a unique approach: aneutronic fusion using hydrogen-boron (p-B11) fuel instead of the deuterium-tritium fuel that most fusion companies use. The advantage: hydrogen-boron fusion produces almost no neutron radiation, meaning simpler reactor designs, less radioactive waste, and potentially cheaper power plants.

Revenue is pre-commercial, but TAE has commercialized its power management technology through a subsidiary (TAE Power Solutions) selling into EV fast-charging and grid-scale energy storage.

Its power management technology (developed for fusion research) has immediate commercial applications in EV fast-charging, grid-scale energy storage, and defense. TAE Power Solutions sells these products NOW, generating revenue while the fusion research continues.

The next major milestone: Copernicus, a reactor planned for the early 2030s that aims to demonstrate net energy from hydrogen-boron fusion.

THE HARD PART

Hydrogen-boron fusion requires temperatures of 3 billion degrees Celsius — roughly 200x hotter than the deuterium-tritium fusion that other companies pursue. This is an almost incomprehensibly difficult engineering challenge.

Most fusion physicists consider hydrogen-boron fusion a generation beyond D-T fusion, which itself hasn't been commercially achieved. TAE needs to prove that its FRC approach can reach these extreme temperatures and sustain them long enough for net energy production.
