Netfigo Verdict
on Telegram

Telegram is the messaging app that governments love to hate — encrypted, uncensored, and used by 900 million people ranging from privacy advocates to protest organizers to, unfortunately, criminals. Pavel Durov built it after being forced out of VK (Russia's Facebook) by the Kremlin, self-funded it for a decade, and recently monetized through TON blockchain and premium subscriptions. The anti-establishment messaging app that refuses to die.

THE ORIGIN STORY

Pavel Durov created Russia's largest social network, VKontakte (VK), in 2006. When the Russian government pressured him to hand over user data of Ukrainian protesters, he refused, was forced out of VK, and left Russia.

He and his brother Nikolai (a mathematician) built Telegram in 2013 as a messaging app that prioritized encryption and privacy. They launched from a self-imposed exile, moving between countries before settling in Dubai.

Telegram grew explosively — especially in countries with authoritarian governments where people needed private communication channels.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

Telegram is a cloud-based messaging app emphasizing speed, security, and large group capabilities (up to 200,000 members). Revenue comes from Telegram Premium subscriptions ($5/month for extra features), advertising in public channels, and the TON blockchain ecosystem (Telegram Stars, in-app payments).

For its first seven years, Durov self-funded the app from his VK fortune, reportedly spending $200+ million of his own money before seeking outside capital through bond sales.

THE PRODUCTS

Telegram Messenger (900M+ MAU), Telegram Premium ($5/month), Channels (broadcast to unlimited subscribers), Groups (up to 200K members), TON blockchain ecosystem, Telegram Bot platform, Telegram Mini Apps

HOW THEY GREW

Grow Telegram Premium subscriptions and advertising revenue. Build the TON blockchain ecosystem into a major Web3 platform (mini apps, payments, digital identity).

Expand business tools for companies using Telegram as a customer communication channel. Maintain the privacy-first positioning while finding ways to address government concerns.

THE HARD PART

Walking the line between free speech and illegal activity. Telegram's refusal to moderate content or share data with governments has made it a haven for activists AND criminals.

Pavel Durov was arrested in France in 2024 over allegations that Telegram facilitated illegal activity. Governments worldwide pressure Telegram to cooperate with law enforcement.

Monetizing a privacy-focused app without alienating the user base is the business challenge.
