THE ORIGIN STORY

Founded in 2016 in Toronto by AI researchers who believed the industry needed AI chips designed around a fundamentally different compute model called "conditional computation" — where the chip only processes the data that matters, skipping unnecessary calculations. The company operated quietly until 2021, when Jim Keller — arguably the most famous chip architect alive (he designed AMD Zen, Apple's A-series, and worked on Tesla's self-driving chip) — joined as CEO.

Keller's arrival transformed Tenstorrent from an obscure startup into the most closely watched Nvidia challenger in the world.

THE HARD PART

Recruiting and retaining talent against Nvidia, Google, and every other chip company that can pay more. Building a competitive chip company from Canada (not Silicon Valley) adds complexity.
