Trulioo built an identity verification network that works in 195 countries. That sounds like a compliance technology company until you realize global identity verification is the reason the internet has such a hard time knowing who anyone actually is. Financial crime, money laundering, and sanctions evasion all scale up in the gaps where identity checks fail. Trulioo raised $394 million at a $1.75 billion valuation in 2021, backed by TCV and Goldman Sachs. They are playing a long, slow, essential game — and global regulatory pressure keeps making that game more valuable every year.

Stephen Ufford founded Trulioo in Vancouver in 2011 after working in digital marketing and concluding that verifying identity online was genuinely broken — not just difficult, but structurally inadequate for a global economy. Most verification systems worked fine in North America and Western Europe.
They fell apart completely everywhere else. There were no reliable digital data sources in most of Latin America, Southeast Asia, or Africa, so companies either skipped verification or used inadequate manual processes.
Ufford started building a global identity data network by connecting to data providers, government registries, credit bureaus, and utility companies in countries that traditional systems ignored. The global coverage was not a feature — it was the product.
If you could verify identities in 195 countries with a single API call, that was a fundamentally different value proposition than anything available elsewhere.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
Trulioo charges businesses per identity verification, with volume pricing for high-usage customers. Their GlobalGateway product connects clients — financial institutions, crypto exchanges, digital marketplaces, and any company with regulatory KYC obligations — to a network of data sources across 195+ countries.
A client sends a verification request with basic identity data. GlobalGateway routes it to the relevant local data sources, cross-references the result, and returns a match score.
Simple at the surface. Enormously complex underneath.
Maintaining live data partnerships across 195 jurisdictions, each with their own privacy laws and data availability, is the operational challenge that makes the business defensible.
THE PRODUCTS
GlobalGateway is the core product — a single API that routes identity verification requests to the appropriate local data sources across 195+ countries and returns match results with confidence scores in real time. PersonMatch and BusinessMatch are separate verification products for individual and corporate entity checks.
Trulioo also offers document verification and biometric checks, providing the full KYC stack for companies that want a single vendor for their entire global customer base.
HOW THEY GREW
The geographic coverage was the growth story. Trulioo did not try to be the best at verifying US identities — they tried to be the only platform that could reliably verify identities everywhere.
That positioning made them uniquely attractive to global companies: crypto exchanges operating across dozens of markets, remittance services, international e-commerce platforms, and banks expanding into emerging markets.
Goldman Sachs invested specifically because the bank needed global AML-compliant identity infrastructure for its international operations. That early strategic investor sent a signal to other financial institutions.
Every new country Trulioo added made the network more valuable to existing customers. The flywheel ran on coverage, not just accuracy.
THE HARD PART
Data partnerships are both the moat and the vulnerability. Trulioo's network depends on agreements with data providers in 195 countries.
Those providers can renegotiate terms, face local regulatory changes, or begin selling their data directly to competitors. Maintaining 195 country-by-country data relationships is operationally exhausting and expensive to keep current.
There is also increasing competition from Socure, Onfido, and Jumio, all chasing the same enterprise contracts with strong technology and growing geographic coverage.

WHO BACKED THEM
TCV (Technology Crossover Ventures) led the landmark $394 million Series D in June 2021, valuing Trulioo at $1.75 billion. Goldman Sachs was an early investor in the 2016 Series B — notable for a major investment bank backing a KYC infrastructure company, signalling its own need for the product.
American Express Ventures also invested, reflecting the financial services market Trulioo targets. The company has remained private despite unicorn status.
