VEDANTU

Netfigo Verdict
on Vedantu

Four ex-teachers built India's biggest live tutoring platform — then watched the entire Indian edtech sector implode. Vedantu's live class model was genuinely better than recorded video: real teachers, real-time quizzes, and AI tracking whether students were actually paying attention. But when COVID ended and students went back to physical classrooms, online-only edtech lost its urgency. The Aakash acquisition saved the company, but the dream of replacing India's coaching centers with apps hit reality hard.

Status

Acquired by Aakash Educational Services in 2023. Operating as a hybrid online/offline education platform.

THE ORIGIN STORY

All four founders were former school teachers who independently ran offline coaching centers. They noticed the same problem: India's best teachers were in Delhi and Mumbai, but the students who needed them most were in tier-2 and tier-3 cities with no access to quality education.

In 2011, they founded Vedantu (Sanskrit for "knowledge network") to bridge this gap. The platform evolved from one-on-one tutoring (expensive, hard to scale) to large-group live classes (cheaper per student, massive scale).

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

Online live tutoring platform for K-12 students in India preparing for competitive exams (IIT-JEE, NEET, board exams). Revenue comes from course fees — students pay for semester-long live classes taught by top teachers.

The model: take India's best teachers (who would normally teach 30 students in a physical classroom) and let them teach 10,000 students simultaneously through live video. The WAVE platform uses AI to make live classes interactive — teachers can quiz students in real-time and track engagement.

THE PRODUCTS

Vedantu LIVE Classes (large-group live classes with real-time interaction), WAVE Platform (interactive live learning technology), JEE/NEET Preparation (intensive courses for India's most competitive exams), Vedantu SuperKids (K-5 live classes), and Vedantu Improvement Promise (score improvement guarantee or money back).

HOW THEY GREW

Hybrid learning and test preparation focus. Vedantu is combining online live classes with offline test centers — students attend live lectures online but take practice exams at physical centers.

The competitive exam focus (IIT-JEE, NEET) is strategically smart: these exams are life-determining in India, and parents will pay premium prices for quality preparation. Expanding into younger age groups (primary school) and international markets provides additional growth.

THE HARD PART

The Indian edtech crash. After the COVID-19 boom (when every student was forced online), Indian edtech crashed hard in 2022-2023.

Students went back to physical classrooms, parents demanded refunds, and investor sentiment turned hostile. BYJU'S, the category leader, imploded spectacularly.

Vedantu cut 40% of its workforce in 2022. The acquisition by Aakash (a physical coaching chain) in 2023 provided stability but at a significantly reduced valuation.
