KAIN WARWICK

Founder of DeFi protocol Synthetix and a pioneer of yield farming.

Netfigo Verdict
on Kain Warwick

Kain Warwick basically invented the thing that made DeFi go crazy in 2020. As founder of Synthetix, he pioneered yield farming, the trick of paying people in tokens to use a protocol, which set off the wild stretch known as DeFi Summer. Before crypto he ran a payments company in Australia called blueshyft. Synthetix began as a stablecoin project called Havven and raised about 30 million dollars in a 2018 token sale. Now he is building Infinex to make crypto apps feel a lot less terrifying. The father of yield farming, for better and worse.

CAREER & BACKGROUND

Warwick took a strange road into crypto. He spent his early childhood in the United States, then moved to Australia around age twelve.

His father was an Australian professional tennis player. He started studying genetics at the University of New South Wales, then dropped out after about eighteen months.

He bounced through startups, including an online music equipment shop. In 2015 he founded blueshyft, a point-of-sale network across Australia.

That payments experience pulled him toward crypto, and in 2016 he started the project that became Synthetix.

COMPANIES & ROLES

Synthetix is his big one. It is a DeFi protocol on Ethereum that lets people create and trade synthetic assets, basically tokens that track the price of real things like currencies or stocks, without owning the underlying asset.

It began life as a stablecoin project called Havven. He also founded blueshyft, which grew into one of Australia largest crypto retail payment networks with over a thousand outlets.

His newest venture is Infinex, launched in 2023, an app built to make using DeFi feel as easy as a normal finance app.

INVESTING STYLE & PHILOSOPHY

Warwick is a builder who invests by shipping. He does not sit back and pick tokens.

He creates the protocols and experiments in public, often moving fast and breaking things. His signature move was yield farming, paying early users in Synthetix tokens to bootstrap activity.

It worked so well the whole industry copied it in 2020. He bets on mechanisms and incentives, figuring out what actually makes people use a crypto product.

When something works, he doubles down. When it does not, he kills it and tries the next thing.

THE PLAYBOOK

Risk Approach

Warwick has a very high tolerance for chaos. He dropped out of university, jumped between startups, and then bet his career on an experimental DeFi protocol when almost nobody understood it.

Synthetix has been hacked and has survived brutal bear markets. He treats crypto like a live laboratory where blowups are part of the process.

He is candid that a lot of what he tries will simply fail. The willingness to launch messy, unfinished ideas and fix them in public is exactly what makes him effective and occasionally reckless.

Money Habits

Warwick lives inside the crypto world he helped build. He is a fixture at DeFi conferences and a heavy presence in Synthetix community forums, where governance actually happens.

He is known for being unusually open, doing long interviews and talking candidly about what is broken in DeFi. Rather than cashing out and disappearing, he keeps starting new projects.

Infinex is the latest proof that he would rather keep building than sit on a beach counting tokens.

BIGGEST WIN

The big win was Synthetix and the invention of yield farming in 2020. By paying users in tokens to provide liquidity, Warwick found a way to bootstrap a protocol from almost nothing into hundreds of millions in value.

Then the entire DeFi industry copied the playbook, kicking off the frenzy known as DeFi Summer. Synthetix at its peak held well over a billion dollars locked in its contracts.

Whatever you think of the tokens, the mechanism he popularized reshaped how crypto projects grow.

BIGGEST MISTAKE

Warwick is the first to admit DeFi governance has gotten worse, not better, and he owns part of that. Synthetix, like most DeFi projects, has leaned on multi-signature wallets where a small group can override token holders.

He calls a lot of on-chain voting governance theater. The yield farming he popularized also has an ugly side.

It spawned countless copycat projects that paid out worthless tokens and then collapsed, wiping out regular investors. The tool he built to bootstrap real protocols became a template for scams.

FINANCIAL PHILOSOPHY

His guiding belief is that the best way to predict the future of crypto is to build it. He cares more about working mechanisms than grand theories.

He also worries loudly about governance, the boring but crucial question of how decentralized projects make decisions. He has warned that governance gets thrown out the window during bull markets, when everyone just wants to move fast.

His view is that incentives are everything. Get the incentives right and users show up.

Get them wrong and no amount of hype saves you.

FAMILY & PERSONAL LIFE

Warwick was born into an athletic family. His father was an Australian professional tennis player who competed at the top level.

Kain spent his early years in the United States before the family settled in Australia. He is famously low-key about his personal life, letting his projects and his very active online presence do the talking.

In a scene full of anonymous founders, he has always built under his own real name.

EDUCATION

Warwick studied genetics at the University of New South Wales in Australia. He dropped out after roughly eighteen months, deciding startups were more interesting than a degree.

There is no fancy finance pedigree here. Everything he knows about markets and money he learned by building payment companies and then a DeFi protocol from scratch.

The dropout-turned-founder story is very on brand for crypto.

QUOTES (5)

At the crux of the matter is how do we ensure that token holders, the people who own the project, the people who control the project, the people who should be making the decisions, are able to very clearly express their preferences as to what should happen within the project.

Governance just gets thrown out the window during a bull market, right?

defigovernanceDecrypt interview, 2023

Governance is actually worse today than one year ago.

defigovernanceDecrypt interview, 2023

That is governance theater.

defigovernanceDecrypt interview, 2023

My strong hope is out of this bear market, we will get much more robust solutions so that we can get rid of this multi-sig problem, and come out into the next bull market with a much more reasonable governance framework.
