AIVA

Netfigo Verdict
on AIVA

AIVA did something no AI had done before: it became a legally recognized composer. In 2017, SACEM — France and Luxembourg's music rights society — granted AIVA status as a composer, the first AI to receive it. That's not a marketing stunt. It means AIVA's music can be legally attributed to the AI itself. Founded in Luxembourg by Pierre Barreau, AIVA targets game developers, filmmakers, and content creators who need orchestral and cinematic music without paying a full composer. Small team, profitable model, and a genuine moat built on a legal first.

THE ORIGIN STORY

Pierre Barreau studied at the London School of Economics and the EPFL before starting AIVA in Luxembourg in 2016. The idea: train a deep learning model on thousands of classical music scores — Bach, Beethoven, Mozart — to generate original compositions in any orchestral style.

The breakthrough came in 2017 when SACEM granted AIVA formal recognition as a composer, allowing its music to be copyright-registered in both the company's name and users' names. That legal legitimacy separated AIVA from every other AI music tool on the market.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

Subscription-based with freemium entry. Free accounts can download a limited number of tracks per month with restrictions.

Standard and Pro plans ($11–$33/month) allow full commercial use, custom copyright, and higher download limits. Enterprise licensing for studios and game developers is a separate revenue stream.

AIVA also sells music directly through its library.

THE PRODUCTS

AIVA Composer (the core AI composition engine supporting 250+ styles). AIVA Music Library (pre-generated tracks for immediate commercial use).

AIVA API (for enterprise clients embedding the engine into their workflows).

HOW THEY GREW

Niche-first. AIVA went deep on orchestral and cinematic music — the segment most in demand for games, trailers, and films — rather than trying to generate every genre.

This focus gave them credibility with professional creators who cared about quality. Word-of-mouth in the game dev and indie film communities drove organic growth without heavy marketing spend.

THE HARD PART

The AI music space is getting crowded fast. Suno, Udio, and Boomy are attracting far more capital and targeting the same creative market.

AIVA's advantage is orchestral quality and legal clarity, but staying ahead on model quality against better-funded competitors will be the defining test.
