Udio was founded in 2023 by a team of AI researchers formerly at Google DeepMind. David Ding, Andrew Sanchez, Conor Durkan, and Charlie Nash had worked on generative audio models and saw an opportunity to build an AI that could generate full songs from text prompts.

The team built on the rapid advances in diffusion models and transformer architectures that had already revolutionized image generation (Midjourney, DALL-E). They applied similar techniques to audio, training on large datasets of music to teach the model about melody, harmony, rhythm, and production.

Udio launched in public beta in April 2024 and immediately went viral. The quality shocked everyone.

Songs generated from simple prompts had coherent lyrics, real-sounding vocals, and professional-quality production.

Freemium with a subscription tier. Free users get a limited number of song generations per month.

Paid subscribers get more generations and higher quality outputs. Since the label settlements in late 2025, downloads are switched off entirely, so what you make stays inside Udio.

The licensed platform built with Universal and Warner is the intended future of the business.

The Udio song generator takes text prompts and generates 30-second to 2-minute songs with vocals, instrumentation, and production. Users can specify genre, mood, tempo, and even include custom lyrics.

Inpainting lets users regenerate specific sections of a song. Extending allows building longer tracks from shorter generations.

Viral social sharing. People generated songs and posted them on TikTok, X, and YouTube.

The "wow factor" of the output quality drove massive organic growth. Some Udio-generated songs went viral on their own merit, further promoting the platform.

The competitive race with Suno (the other leading AI music generator) kept both companies in the headlines constantly.

Copyright, and what settling it costs. Universal, Sony and Warner all sued Udio in June 2024 over training on copyrighted music.

Universal settled in October 2025 and Warner in November, each signing a licensing deal for a new authorised Udio platform. Sony is still litigating.

The price of peace was steep. Udio suspended all downloads on 30 October 2025, opened a 48-hour window in November for users to rescue their files, then closed the gates.

It is now a walled garden where you can generate and stream but not export, which guts the appeal for anyone who wanted to actually release a track. The ethical question of whether AI should replicate human artistic expression is still unresolved, and musicians from bedroom producers to Grammy winners are not happy.

Quality consistency is still an issue too. The best outputs are remarkable.

Many are mediocre.

Udio raised a $10 million seed round from investors including Andreessen Horowitz. The a16z investment came with significant media attention and controversy, given the ongoing copyright debates around AI-generated content.
