beehiiv was built by two Morning Brew alumni who decided to create the newsletter platform they would have wanted while building a $75M newsletter business. It has better analytics, a built-in ad network, and monetization tools that make Substack look like a blog. It is the operator's choice for serious newsletter businesses that want to actually grow and make money.

beehiiv.comTHE ORIGIN STORY
Tyler Denk and Benjamin Hargett both worked at Morning Brew — one of the most successful newsletter businesses ever built, reaching $75M annual revenue with 4 million subscribers. They had used Mailchimp and Substack and found them lacking for serious newsletter operators: the analytics were weak, the monetization tools were limited, and the overall product felt like it was designed for hobbyists, not businesses.
They built beehiiv as the platform they would have wanted at Morning Brew: advanced analytics, built-in ad network, referral programs, subscription capabilities, and an editor that didn't feel like Microsoft Word 2003.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
beehiiv charges newsletter creators a monthly subscription fee based on subscriber count, starting free (up to 2,500 subscribers) and scaling to $39–$99/month for growth tiers. It also takes a cut of paid subscription revenue and boosts (ad placements from its ad network).
The dual revenue model — creator subscription fees plus ad network take rate — is designed to make money whether creators are monetizing or not.
THE PRODUCTS
beehiiv newsletter platform (editor, sending, analytics), beehiiv Ad Network (programmatic newsletter advertising), beehiiv Boosts (paid subscriber referrals), paid subscription tiers
HOW THEY GREW
beehiiv built its reputation by being adopted by high-profile newsletter operators who then promoted it to their audiences. It launched an ad network that allows newsletters of any size to monetize through premium CPMs.
The referral program feature (letting readers refer friends for rewards) helped many newsletters grow faster than they could through organic means alone. Y Combinator's backing gave it credibility with the startup/tech creator community.
THE HARD PART
The newsletter platform market is more crowded than it looks: Substack has brand recognition, Mailchimp has legacy market share, ConvertKit targets creators, and Ghost is the open-source alternative. beehiiv has to convince newsletter operators that its superior analytics and monetization tools are worth switching from an established platform with existing audiences and integrations.
The switching cost is not trivial — audience import, URL migrations, and integration breaks are painful.
