Nathan Barry almost shut ConvertKit down in late 2014. The company had been running for 18 months, had less than $2,000 in monthly recurring revenue, and he was burning out. He wrote a public post committing to six more months and began personally calling every potential customer to migrate them. That decision turned into a $35M ARR business. ConvertKit is the definitive bootstrapped SaaS success story of the creator economy era. Rebranded as Kit in 2024. Still private. Still growing.
THE ORIGIN STORY
Nathan Barry was a designer and author who sold digital products online. He tried every email platform available — Mailchimp, AWeber, Campaign Monitor — and found all of them built for e-commerce companies, not creators.
Forms were hard to embed. Automations required technical skills.
Reporting was built around purchase tracking, not audience building. In January 2013, he committed publicly to building ConvertKit in six months, broadcasting his progress online.
He launched with a stripped-down feature set: clean landing pages, simple broadcast emails, and basic automations. The creator focus was the only real differentiator, and it was enough.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
SaaS subscription, priced by subscriber count. Free tier supports up to 10,000 subscribers with basic features.
Paid plans start at $25 per month and scale automatically as a customer's list grows — no manual plan upgrades required, no awkward conversation. Kit Commerce (digital product sales with built-in checkout) was added later and takes a transaction fee, adding a second revenue layer.
The subscriber-count pricing means revenue grows automatically when customers succeed, which creates strong retention incentives.
THE PRODUCTS
Kit Email (broadcast and automated email sequences). Kit Forms (embeddable sign-up forms for any website).
Kit Automations (visual workflow builder for welcome sequences, nurture campaigns, and tag-based logic). Kit Commerce (sell digital products and subscriptions directly through Kit).
Kit Landing Pages (standalone sign-up pages with no coding required).
HOW THEY GREW
ConvertKit grew primarily through creator sponsorships and community word-of-mouth. Nathan Barry aggressively sponsored podcasts and newsletters aimed at bloggers, course creators, and independent writers — the exact audience he was building for.
He built in public from day one, sharing monthly revenue figures on social media. Transparency became a customer acquisition strategy: other founders and creators trusted a product whose numbers were public.
The company also acquired Seva (formerly ConvertKit India) in 2019 to expand internationally. The creator economy boom of 2020 to 2022 — newsletters, courses, podcasts, Substacks — brought a wave of new customers who needed exactly what ConvertKit offered.
THE HARD PART
The 2024 rebrand from ConvertKit to Kit was the most turbulent moment in the company's history. Nathan Barry had wanted to broaden the brand beyond email — Kit could be a broader creative operating system.
But a trademark dispute emerged with a pre-existing company using the Kit name, requiring legal negotiation. Some existing customers were confused or frustrated by the change.
Mailchimp remained a massive incumbent with brand recognition ConvertKit could never fully overcome. And Beehiiv launched in 2021 specifically targeting newsletter creators with a sharper growth-focused product, applying direct competitive pressure.

WHO BACKED THEM
Bootstrapped from January 2013 to 2022. Nathan Barry funded the company himself, taking no venture capital for nine years.
In 2022, Stripe led a $2.75 million investment — a small round by startup standards, used primarily for product development and the planned rebrand. Stripe's investment was strategic: creators who use Kit often also use Stripe for payment processing.
