Spencer Kimball, Peter Mattis, and Ben Darnell worked at Google on infrastructure that powered massive distributed systems. They saw that Google’s internal database technology (Spanner) was years ahead of anything available to the rest of the world.
In 2015, they left Google to build CockroachDB — an open-source distributed SQL database that would give every company Google-grade resilience. The database automatically replicates data across multiple regions, survives node failures, and maintains consistency.
