CommentSold figured out something no one in Silicon Valley thought to look for: that Facebook Live was generating billions of dollars in small boutique sales, completely organically, and nobody had built software to make it less chaotic. Brandon Kruse built that software. The company raised $46 million and now powers over 7,000 retailers. It is the most unsexy-sounding startup with one of the most real growth stories of the last decade — built in Huntsville, Alabama, for boutique owners who sell leggings on Facebook.

Brandon Kruse's wife ran a small online boutique and was selling products through Facebook Live in 2016 — commenters would type 'sold' under a product post to claim it, and she would manually track each order in a spreadsheet. It was a mess.
Kruse, a software developer, built her a tool to automate it: a system that watched the comments, captured the 'sold' replies, and automatically invoiced the buyer. He showed it to other boutique owners.
They all wanted it. He launched CommentSold commercially in 2017, charged a small monthly fee, and grew almost entirely through word of mouth in the boutique retail community.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
CommentSold is a SaaS platform for small and mid-sized retailers selling through live video on Facebook, Instagram, and the CommentSold app. Retailers pay a monthly subscription fee plus a transaction fee on sales processed through the platform.
The software automates everything from comment capture ('sold' tracking), invoicing, payment processing, and inventory management. CommentSold also offers a white-label mobile app product — retailers can have their own branded shopping app powered by CommentSold's infrastructure.
THE PRODUCTS
The core CommentSold platform monitors Facebook and Instagram Live comments, captures 'sold' claims automatically, sends buyers an invoice via text or email, and processes payment. The Live Selling suite handles multi-product streams with real-time inventory updates.
CommentSold's white-label mobile app lets retailers launch their own branded iPhone and Android shopping apps with live selling, push notifications, and loyalty features built in. The platform integrates with major e-commerce providers and includes inventory and order management tools designed specifically for the boutique retail workflow.
HOW THEY GREW
CommentSold grew almost entirely bottom-up through the boutique retail community — a tight-knit world of small business owners who share tools in Facebook groups. One boutique owner telling another about CommentSold was more effective than any marketing campaign.
The company built a strong community and referral flywheel, then expanded by adding features that boutique owners actually asked for: mobile apps, multi-channel support, inventory management. They moved upmarket slowly, adding larger retailers once the core platform was proven.
Sequoia Capital's investment in 2022 validated the business model and gave them capital to expand internationally.
THE HARD PART
CommentSold's biggest vulnerability is platform dependency. The business was built on Facebook and Instagram Live — and Meta has repeatedly changed algorithms, reduced organic reach, and introduced its own commerce features.
Every platform change is a potential threat to CommentSold's retailers and therefore to CommentSold itself. The company has responded by building its own app ecosystem, but the transition from social-platform-dependent to owned-channel requires retailers to change habits, which is slow.
TikTok Shop's aggressive push into live commerce also introduces a powerful new competitor with its own native tools.

WHO BACKED THEM
CommentSold raised $46 million in total funding. A $38 million Series A in 2022 was led by Sequoia Capital — a significant signal given Sequoia's standards and the bootstrapped, small-town origin story.
Earlier funding came from angel investors and smaller rounds. The Sequoia backing gave CommentSold access to enterprise sales networks and the credibility to pitch larger retailers beyond the boutique segment it started with.
