CONVEX

Netfigo Verdict
on Convex

Convex was built by the Dropbox engineer who made sync work for millions of users, and it shows. The platform defaults to real-time — when data changes, every connected client sees it instantly, no extra code required. For builders making collaborative or real-time apps, it eliminates entire categories of backend complexity. The question is how big that market is relative to plain CRUD.

THE ORIGIN STORY

James Cowling was a senior engineer at Dropbox who spent years building the infrastructure that made Dropbox's sync work reliably across millions of devices. The core technical challenge — keeping data consistent across users in real time — is one of the hardest problems in software engineering.

Cowling wanted to build a backend platform where real-time sync was the default, not an add-on. Convex launched in 2021 as a "reactive database" — when data changes, all connected clients automatically see the update, with no polling or manual subscription management required.

For applications where real-time collaboration matters (chat apps, collaborative tools, multiplayer games), this is a significant developer productivity win.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

Convex is a serverless backend platform — it handles database, real-time sync, server functions, file storage, and scheduled jobs. Developers pay for the compute and storage they consume, with a generous free tier.

Revenue scales with product traffic and database usage.

THE PRODUCTS

Convex reactive database (real-time sync), Convex Functions (server-side logic), Convex File Storage, Convex Scheduled Functions (cron jobs), Convex Search

HOW THEY GREW

Convex grew through developer community content — tutorials, YouTube videos, and conference talks that demonstrated how much simpler real-time application backends became on the platform. Sam Altman's angel investment and Y Combinator backing gave it credibility in the AI-adjacent developer community, where real-time applications (AI assistants, collaborative AI tools) are particularly well-suited to the platform.

THE HARD PART

The backend-as-a-service market is extremely competitive. Supabase, Firebase, PlanetScale, Neon, and the major cloud providers all offer overlapping functionality.

Convex's real-time-first architecture is a genuine differentiator for specific use cases, but developers building CRUD apps with no real-time requirements have many alternatives. Convincing developers to build on Convex requires teaching them to think about backend architecture differently.
