Culture Amp turned employee surveys into a $1.5 billion business. Built in Melbourne, Australia, by a former film director who decided measuring workplace culture was more interesting than measuring box office returns. The platform helps 6,500+ companies understand what their employees actually think — as opposed to what they say in meetings. It’s basically a lie detector for corporate morale, and companies pay handsomely for the truth.

Didier Elzinga had an unusual background — he ran a film production company before pivoting to HR tech. He saw that companies were making people decisions based on gut feeling rather than data.
Employee surveys existed, but they were annual, clunky, and nobody acted on the results.
He founded Culture Amp in Melbourne in 2011 to bring real-time, actionable people analytics to companies. The platform launched with an employee engagement survey product and expanded into performance management and development.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
SaaS subscription based on company size. Culture Amp charges per-employee annual fees.
Products include engagement surveys, performance reviews, and development tools. Revenue comes primarily from enterprise and mid-market clients.
The platform serves 6,500+ companies including Airbnb, Slack, and Etsy.
THE PRODUCTS
Employee Engagement — surveys with AI-driven insights and action recommendations. Performance Management — continuous feedback, goals, and calibration.
Employee Development — growth-focused conversations and development plans. People Analytics — cross-cutting data on engagement, performance, and retention.
HOW THEY GREW
Culture Amp grew through thought leadership in the "people analytics" space. They published research, hosted events, and built a community of HR professionals.
The product spread through HR networks — when an HR leader moved to a new company, they often brought Culture Amp with them.
THE HARD PART
Competing with larger players like Qualtrics (acquired by SAP for $8 billion) and survey tools from Microsoft and Google that bundle employee feedback into broader platforms. Proving ROI on "culture" initiatives is also inherently difficult.
