Netfigo Verdict
on BambooHR

BambooHR is the HR software that small and mid-size businesses actually like using. Built in Lindon, Utah — not Silicon Valley — by founders who thought HR software should be simple enough that you don’t need a PhD to use it. They’ve grown to 33,000+ customers without the aggressive sales tactics that make enterprise software feel like a hostage negotiation. Proof that Utah can build world-class software.

THE ORIGIN STORY

Ben Peterson and Ryan Sanders were working in tech in Utah and kept seeing the same problem: small and mid-size companies either used spreadsheets for HR or paid for enterprise systems that were way too complex. Nobody was building HR software specifically designed for companies with 25 to 1,000 employees.

They founded BambooHR in 2008 in Lindon, Utah, with a simple idea: make HR software that’s actually pleasant to use. Clean design.

Easy setup. No consultants needed.

The kind of software where you can start using it the day you buy it.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

SaaS subscription based on company size. BambooHR charges a per-employee monthly fee, typically starting around $6-8 per employee per month.

This makes it affordable for small businesses while scaling with growing companies.

The product is self-serve — companies can sign up, configure, and start using it without professional services or consultants. This low-touch model keeps costs down and margins high.

THE PRODUCTS

Core HR platform — employee records, org charts, time-off tracking. Applicant Tracking System (ATS) for hiring.

Performance management and employee engagement tools. Payroll processing (added more recently).

Reporting and analytics dashboard.

HOW THEY GREW

Product-led growth. BambooHR invested in making the product so easy to use that HR managers would recommend it to their peers.

Strong word-of-mouth in the SMB HR community drove growth organically. They also built a content marketing machine targeting searches like "best HR software for small business."

THE HARD PART

Moving upmarket into larger companies where Workday and others dominate. The SMB market is large but individual contract values are small.

Growing beyond the mid-market without losing the simplicity that defines the brand is the central tension.
