Four MIT students built Cursor by asking one question: what if your code editor was designed from the ground up around AI, rather than having AI bolted onto an existing editor? VS Code with GitHub Copilot is the mainstream answer — a great editor with an AI plugin.

Cursor's answer is different: a fork of VS Code where every feature, shortcut, and UX decision assumes AI is the primary collaborator. The result is an editor where you can select multiple files, describe what you want to build, and watch the AI make changes across your entire codebase — not just autocomplete a single line.

It launched in 2022 and exploded through developer word-of-mouth in 2023–2024. By late 2024 it was reportedly generating $100M+ ARR.

Cursor charges developers a monthly subscription: free tier, $20/month for the Pro plan, and enterprise pricing. Pro users get unlimited code completions, a certain number of "fast" AI requests per month with the best models (Claude, GPT-4o), and access to Cursor's multi-file editing features.

Revenue scales with the developer subscriber base.

Cursor grew almost entirely through organic developer adoption — engineers discovered it, switched from VS Code + Copilot, and immediately told their teammates. The "Cursor moment" (when a developer watches it refactor an entire component across 10 files with one prompt) is a genuine conversion event.

The company leaned into this by publishing technical blog posts and letting the product speak for itself rather than traditional marketing.

Cursor operates in the most competitive category in developer tooling. GitHub Copilot has 1.8 million paid subscribers and Microsoft's distribution.

Codeium is free and growing. JetBrains has their own AI assistant.

Amazon CodeWhisperer is free with AWS. Cursor's differentiation is the native multi-file, whole-codebase editing experience — Copilot is better at in-line suggestions, Cursor is better at "make this change across the whole project." That distinction resonates with professional developers but is harder to explain to non-developers evaluating tools.
