Built by people from British intelligence with AI that learns what normal looks like inside your network and screams when something is off. Darktrace was either a genuine AI breakthrough in cybersecurity or a well-marketed anomaly detector — the short sellers had opinions. Then Thoma Bravo bought the whole thing for $5.3 billion in 2024, which suggests someone with deep pockets thinks the AI actually works.

Darktrace was founded in 2013 in Cambridge, UK, with deep roots in British intelligence. Several founders came from the UK's GCHQ (the British equivalent of the NSA), and the company was backed by Invoke Capital, the investment fund of Mike Lynch — the British tech mogul later charged with fraud related to the Autonomy/HP deal.
The founding thesis was that machine learning could detect cyber threats that rule-based systems miss, by learning the "pattern of life" inside a network.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
Darktrace sells AI-powered cybersecurity that models the normal behavior of every user, device, and network flow in an organization — then flags anything anomalous. Think of it as an immune system for your network.
Instead of looking for known attack signatures, Darktrace's AI learns what "normal" looks like and alerts on deviations. Products cover email security, cloud security, OT/IoT, and network detection.
Subscription model, typically annual contracts.
THE PRODUCTS
Darktrace DETECT (threat detection), Darktrace RESPOND (autonomous response), Darktrace PREVENT (attack surface management), Darktrace HEAL (incident recovery)
HOW THEY GREW
International expansion and platform consolidation. Darktrace started in network detection but has expanded into email security (Antigena Email), cloud security, and operational technology.
The strategy is to become the single AI security layer across the entire enterprise. In 2024, Thoma Bravo acquired Darktrace in a $5.3 billion take-private deal — giving the company runway to invest without quarterly earnings pressure.
THE HARD PART
The Mike Lynch connection. Lynch's Invoke Capital was an early backer and his associates were involved in the company's founding.
When Lynch was indicted for fraud related to the $11 billion Autonomy/HP deal, it cast a shadow over everything he was associated with. Darktrace spent years distancing itself from Lynch.
The company also faced short-seller attacks from firms questioning whether the AI actually worked as marketed or was just a fancy anomaly detector generating too many false positives.
