DEEPMIND

Netfigo Verdict
on DeepMind

The AI lab that defeated the world Go champion, solved protein folding, and burns through a billion dollars a year of Google's money. DeepMind is either the most important research lab since Bell Labs or the most expensive hobby in corporate history. AlphaFold alone — which predicted the structure of 200 million proteins and was given away for free — may have done more for biology than any single company in history.

Subsidiary of Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL) — Demis Hassabis serves as CEO of Google DeepMind

THE ORIGIN STORY

Demis Hassabis was a child chess prodigy, video game designer (Theme Park at age 17), and neuroscientist before founding DeepMind in 2010 with Shane Legg and Mustafa Suleyman. Their mission was audacious: solve general intelligence and use it to solve everything else.

They started by applying AI to Atari games — training agents that could learn to play any game from raw pixels alone. The Atari results caught the attention of Google, Facebook, and several other tech giants, sparking a bidding war that Google won for approximately $500 million in 2014.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

AI research lab operating as a subsidiary of Alphabet (Google's parent). Unlike most AI companies, DeepMind doesn't sell products directly — it conducts fundamental AI research that feeds into Google's products and publishes groundbreaking papers.

Revenue comes through Alphabet's overall business: DeepMind's AI improvements power Google Search, YouTube recommendations, Google Cloud, and Android. The lab reportedly costs Alphabet over $1 billion annually to operate.

THE PRODUCTS

AlphaFold (protein structure prediction — solved one of biology's 50-year grand challenges), Gemini (Google's flagship multimodal AI model), AlphaGo (defeated world champion at Go), AlphaCode (AI code generation), Weather forecasting AI (GraphCast), and numerous research breakthroughs in mathematics, materials science, and energy optimization.

HOW THEY GREW

Integrating AI breakthroughs into Google's product ecosystem. AlphaFold solved protein structure prediction — one of biology's hardest problems — and was made available for free, establishing DeepMind as the world's most respected AI lab.

Gemini (Google's foundation model, co-developed with Google Brain) is being integrated across Google products. The strategy is to make DeepMind's research indispensable to Alphabet's entire product portfolio.

THE HARD PART

Justifying its massive cost to Alphabet while maintaining scientific independence. DeepMind reportedly lost over $1 billion annually for several years, creating tension with Google's finance team.

The challenge of balancing pure research (which Hassabis insists is necessary) with commercial applications (which Google needs) has defined DeepMind's path. Mustafa Suleyman left in 2022 to co-found Inflection AI, and later joined Microsoft — a significant loss of founding talent.
