DISTROKID

Netfigo Verdict
on DistroKid

DistroKid lets musicians upload a song and have it on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon, TikTok, and every other streaming platform within hours. Not weeks. Hours. For $22.99 a year. Unlimited uploads. Philip Kaplan built it because the existing distributors (TuneCore, CD Baby) charged per release and took weeks. DistroKid now distributes a third of all new music on Spotify. One person's frustration with the music industry turned into the default distribution tool for independent musicians.

THE ORIGIN STORY

Philip Kaplan (known online as "Pud") was a serial entrepreneur who had previously built Fucked Company (a dot-com era gossip site) and AdBrite (an ad network). He was also a musician who tried to get his music on Spotify and found the process painful.

Existing distributors like TuneCore charged per release ($9.99 per single, $29.99 per album) and took weeks to process. Kaplan thought this was absurd in 2013.

He built DistroKid as a flat-fee, unlimited upload platform. One annual fee, unlimited songs, on every platform.

Musicians loved it. Word spread through music forums, YouTube channels, and social media.

By 2018, DistroKid was distributing more new music to Spotify than any other distributor.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

DistroKid charges musicians a flat annual fee ($22.99/year for the basic plan, higher tiers for additional features). For that fee, musicians can upload unlimited songs to every major streaming platform.

DistroKid keeps the fee and the artist keeps 100% of their streaming royalties. They make additional revenue from premium features: Spotify for Artists access, lyrics distribution, custom release dates, team plans for labels, and a "Leave a Legacy" feature that keeps music online after the subscription lapses.

The model is brutally simple and has been wildly successful.

THE PRODUCTS

DistroKid's core product is unlimited music distribution to 150+ streaming platforms. Hyperfollow creates smart landing pages for new releases.

Spotify for Artists integration lets musicians manage their Spotify profile. DistroKid Mastering provides AI-powered audio mastering.

Teams allows labels to manage multiple artists. Bankroll lets fans invest in songs.

They also handle licensing, rights management, and royalty splits for collaborators.

HOW THEY GREW

DistroKid grew almost entirely through word of mouth. Musicians told other musicians.

YouTube music channels reviewed it. The flat-fee unlimited model was so obviously better than per-release pricing that adoption was organic.

Kaplan also made smart product decisions: DistroKid was faster (songs live in hours, not weeks), cheaper, and simpler than any competitor. They expanded internationally and added features like mastering, music video distribution, and social media tools to increase stickiness.

THE HARD PART

Competition from TuneCore (owned by Believe), CD Baby (owned by Downtown Music), and newer entrants like Amuse and UnitedMasters is intensifying. Some competitors are now offering similar flat-fee models.

DistroKid's margins are thin on the basic plan ($22.99/year) and depend on upselling premium features. There are also musician complaints about customer service (hard to reach a human) and about the difficulty of getting music removed or transferred to another distributor.

The music distribution market is commoditizing rapidly.

WHO BACKED THEM

Insight Partners invested $100 million in a minority stake in 2018, valuing DistroKid at approximately $1.3 billion. That was the only known institutional funding round.

Kaplan bootstrapped the company for five years before taking outside capital. The Insight investment was notable because it was one of the few music tech companies to achieve unicorn-adjacent valuation without having raised dozens of rounds.
