SOUNDCLOUD

Netfigo Verdict
on SoundCloud

SoundCloud let anyone upload a song and share it with the world. That's it. That simple idea made it the YouTube of audio. Chance the Rapper, Post Malone, Billie Eilish, and XXXTentacion were all discovered on SoundCloud. The platform has 76 million tracks and 175 million monthly users. It nearly died in 2017 when it ran out of money, got rescued by a $170 million emergency investment, and has been fighting for survival against Spotify ever since. The platform that launched a thousand careers and almost couldn't save its own.

THE ORIGIN STORY

Alexander Ljung and Eric Wahlforss were musicians in Stockholm who were frustrated with how hard it was to share audio files. MySpace let you embed songs, but the experience was terrible.

In 2007, they moved to Berlin (cheaper, cooler) and built SoundCloud as a simple platform for musicians to upload, share, and discover audio. The key innovation was the waveform player — that orange timeline you could comment on at specific moments in a track.

It made listening interactive. By 2010, SoundCloud was the de facto platform for independent musicians, DJs, podcasters, and producers.

Remixes, bootlegs, DJ sets, and bedroom productions thrived on the platform.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

SoundCloud runs a freemium model. Free users can upload and listen with ads.

SoundCloud Go and Go+ are paid subscription tiers ($4.99 and $9.99/month) that offer offline listening, no ads, and higher audio quality. SoundCloud also makes money from advertising on the free tier and from SoundCloud for Artists (tools and analytics for creators).

In 2021, they launched "fan-powered royalties" — paying artists based on which listeners actually stream their music, rather than pooling all revenue and dividing by total streams. This was a first in the streaming industry.

THE PRODUCTS

SoundCloud's core platform hosts 76 million+ tracks from 30 million+ creators. SoundCloud Go+ is the premium subscription tier.

Fan-Powered Royalties is their unique artist payment system. SoundCloud for Artists provides analytics, promotion tools, and distribution.

SoundCloud Pulse is the mobile app for creators to manage their accounts. Repost by SoundCloud provides distribution to Spotify, Apple Music, and other platforms.

HOW THEY GREW

SoundCloud's growth was organic and cultural. Independent musicians, DJs, and producers adopted it because there was no alternative that was as simple and open.

The "SoundCloud rap" wave (2015-2018) brought massive mainstream attention. Growth challenges led to a near-death experience in 2017 — the company laid off 40% of staff and nearly ran out of money before emergency funding arrived.

Since then, the strategy has been profitability through subscriptions, advertising, and creator tools rather than growth-at-all-costs.

THE HARD PART

Competition from Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, and Tidal is brutal. SoundCloud's unique value is its open upload model, but that also means content moderation challenges and copyright issues (record labels have sued repeatedly over unlicensed uploads).

Monetizing a platform where most content is free and most users are listeners — not paying subscribers — is structurally difficult. The company has struggled to achieve consistent profitability despite years of cost-cutting.
