DUNE ANALYTICS

Netfigo Verdict
on Dune Analytics

Dune Analytics democratized blockchain data by doing something radical: making it free. Two engineers in Oslo built a platform where anyone could write SQL against live Ethereum data and publish their analysis as a public dashboard — no credentials required, no Bloomberg terminal, no API keys. During the DeFi and NFT boom of 2020-2022, Dune dashboards became the standard way to understand what was happening on-chain. They raised $69.4 million in a Series B at a $1 billion valuation in 2022. The community-powered analytics thesis worked beautifully. The billion-dollar question is whether free analytics can sustain a billion-dollar business.

THE ORIGIN STORY

Fredrik Haga and Mats Olsen were working in the crypto industry in Norway in 2018 and kept running into the same problem: they wanted to analyze on-chain data, but doing it required either expensive data vendors or hours of manual work setting up nodes and parsing raw blockchain data. Both felt wrong for what was supposed to be a publicly accessible, transparent ledger.

They built Dune as a query interface for Ethereum data — write SQL, get results, publish as a chart. Free, public, shareable.

The first users were other analysts who also wanted to understand what was happening on DeFi protocols. Those analysts built dashboards, shared them, and other analysts found them through Google and Twitter.

The community model kicked in before the company had a business model. When DeFi volumes exploded in 2020, Dune was already the tool that serious researchers were using.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

Dune runs a freemium model with a strong community hook. Anyone can query public blockchain data and publish dashboards for free.

Paid plans start around $349 per month for teams and go up to enterprise pricing, adding private queries, faster query execution, API access, and data export. Enterprise deals with major crypto protocols and exchanges provide meaningful revenue.

The free public layer is not charity — it's the distribution engine. Every public Dune dashboard is essentially a product demo that routes traffic back to the platform.

THE PRODUCTS

The Dune Query Editor is the core product — a SQL interface against decoded blockchain data across Ethereum, Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism, Solana, and other chains. The Spellbook is the community-maintained data transformation layer — a public repository of SQL models that standardize how protocol-specific events are decoded and categorized.

The Dashboard Gallery hosts tens of thousands of community-built analytics dashboards, effectively making Dune a Wikipedia of on-chain data. The Dune API lets developers query Dune programmatically and embed results in their own applications.

HOW THEY GREW

Dune grew through community and necessity. When DeFi protocols launched in 2020-2021, the first question everyone asked was: how much money is in this?

Dune dashboards answered it. Protocol teams built their own dashboards showing total value locked, user growth, and fee revenue.

Researchers built dashboards comparing protocols. Traders built dashboards tracking whale behavior.

Every new protocol that launched created a cluster of Dune dashboards within days.

The NFT boom amplified this. Dune's community tracked NFT sales volumes, floor prices, marketplace activity, and royalty flows.

OpenSea dashboards on Dune got hundreds of thousands of views. The platform had achieved something rare: organic, community-powered growth where users were creating content that marketed the product to the next wave of users.

THE HARD PART

Dune's biggest challenge is monetization at scale. The free public layer that drives adoption is also a ceiling on revenue — users who can get useful analysis for free have less incentive to upgrade.

Query speed on the free tier is intentionally limited, which pushes power users toward paid plans, but many casual users never feel that friction. Competing with platforms like Nansen — which have a proprietary data layer through wallet labeling — is another challenge.

Dune's data is public and replicable. Nansen's labeled wallet database is not.

As crypto analytics matures, that proprietary data advantage becomes increasingly valuable.

WHO BACKED THEM

Coatue Management led the $69.4 million Series B at a $1 billion valuation in 2022 — a notable bet on crypto data infrastructure from a growth equity fund not primarily known for crypto investments. Union Square Ventures and Multicoin Capital backed earlier rounds, reflecting conviction from investors with deep crypto ecosystems.

The investor base made sense at the peak: Dune was positioned as the Bloomberg of crypto data, and Bloomberg's business model — sell professional analytics access at premium prices — seemed like the obvious destination.
