Fi is the neobank for India's tech-savvy millennials — a digital banking app that combines smart money management with investing, all wrapped in an experience designed by former Google Pay and PayPal leaders. The app automatically categorizes spending, helps users save through "smart deposits," and connects seamlessly with India's UPI payment system. Fi has raised over $100 million to convince young Indians that banking should feel like a consumer tech product, not a government form.

fi.moneyTHE ORIGIN STORY
Sujith Narayanan and Sumit Gwalani were senior leaders at Google Pay India who saw that while UPI had revolutionized payments, the banking experience around it was still terrible. Indian banks had digital apps, but they were clunky, feature-poor, and designed for compliance rather than users.
They left Google Pay in 2019 to build Fi — a neobank that would bring consumer-tech design sensibility to banking. The app launched in 2021 with Federal Bank as the banking partner.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
Partnership-based neobank. Fi partners with Federal Bank for deposits.
Revenue from interchange fees, lending products, mutual fund distribution, and premium features. The company also earns from float income on deposits.
THE PRODUCTS
Fi Savings Account (Federal Bank). Smart Deposit (automated savings).
Spending Insights (AI-powered categorization). Fi Jump (investing in mutual funds and US stocks).
Connected Accounts (aggregate all bank accounts). FIT Rules (automated money management).
HOW THEY GREW
Product quality targeting India's top 20 million highest-earning young professionals. Fi grew through word-of-mouth among tech workers in Bangalore, Mumbai, and Delhi — people who appreciate good design and are willing to try new financial products.
The Google Pay founding team's credibility attracted both users and investors.
THE HARD PART
India's neobank market is saturated. Fi competes with Jupiter, Niyo, and dozens of other digital banking apps, plus traditional banks improving their digital products.
Customer acquisition costs are high, and retention is challenging when users maintain accounts at multiple banks.
