Grant Lee, Jon Noronha, and James Fox were working on knowledge management tools when they realized that people hate making presentations. The process — writing content, designing slides, formatting everything — takes hours.

What if AI could do it in seconds? In 2020, they pivoted to building an AI-powered presentation tool.

Gamma started as a new format for presentations, then leaned hard into AI generation in early 2023, just as the ChatGPT wave hit. Users describe what they want in natural language, and Gamma generates a complete, beautifully designed presentation.

Perfect timing with the AI wave. Gamma added AI deck generation just as ChatGPT made AI-generated content mainstream.

The product went viral on Twitter and TikTok, where people posted side-by-side comparisons of Gamma-generated decks and hand-built PowerPoint. By late 2025 it counted about 70 million users who had made more than 400 million decks, documents and websites.

It grew mostly through word of mouth and a free tier, not a big sales team.

Feature vs. product risk.

Microsoft is adding AI (Copilot) to PowerPoint. Google is adding AI to Slides.

If the incumbents make "generate a deck from a prompt" a standard feature, Gamma's core value could be commoditized. Gamma needs enough differentiation (design quality, websites, collaboration, analytics) to survive the AI feature race.

A smaller headache: in 2025 security researchers found scammers using Gamma pages to host phishing links aimed at Microsoft logins.

Gamma raised a $7 million round in October 2021 and then a $12 million Series A led by Accel in May 2024. It barely touched the money.

In November 2025 Andreessen Horowitz led a $68 million Series B at a $2.1 billion valuation, with Accel and Uncork Capital joining. By then Gamma said it had passed $100 million in annual recurring revenue, had been profitable for more than two years, and had about 50 employees.

That is one of the most capital-efficient growth stories of the AI boom.
