ILLUMIO

Netfigo Verdict
on Illumio

The company that built invisible walls inside your network. Illumio pioneered "microsegmentation" — dividing a network into tiny secure zones so that even if a hacker gets in, they can't move around. Think of it as internal borders for your data center. Before Illumio, once an attacker breached the perimeter, they could roam freely. Illumio changed that. Raised $557 million. Used by some of the largest banks, healthcare companies, and government agencies in the world. The cybersecurity company that protects you from the inside out.

THE ORIGIN STORY

Andrew Rubin and PJ Kirner were cybersecurity veterans who realized the industry was spending billions defending network perimeters (firewalls, intrusion detection) while ignoring what happened after an attacker got inside. In 2013, they founded Illumio to pioneer microsegmentation — creating internal security boundaries within a network.

Instead of one castle wall, you get thousands of internal walls. If an attacker compromises one server, they can't reach the next one.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

SaaS subscriptions. Enterprises pay annual fees based on the number of workloads (servers, containers, endpoints) protected.

Illumio's software creates a real-time map of all application communications and then enforces segmentation policies. The platform works across on-premise data centers, cloud environments, and hybrid setups.

THE PRODUCTS

Illumio Core — microsegmentation for data centers and cloud. Illumio CloudSecure — visibility and segmentation for multi-cloud environments.

Illumio Endpoint — extending segmentation to laptops and desktops. Illumio Application Dependency Map — visualization of all application communications.

HOW THEY GREW

Zero Trust momentum. The cybersecurity industry shifted toward "Zero Trust" architecture (trust nothing, verify everything).

Microsegmentation is a core component of Zero Trust. As CISOs adopted Zero Trust frameworks, Illumio became a natural purchase.

They also benefited from high-profile breaches (Colonial Pipeline, SolarWinds) that proved perimeter security wasn't enough.

THE HARD PART

Market education. Microsegmentation is technically complex, and many organizations struggle to implement it without disrupting their existing applications.

Illumio has to convince security teams that the implementation pain is worth the protection. Competition from Akamai (which acquired Guardicore) and VMware (built-in microsegmentation) has intensified.
