IXIGO

Netfigo Verdict
on Ixigo

Ixigo made a bet nobody else in Indian travel wanted to make: they went after Indian Railways, the world's fourth-largest railway network with 22 million passengers a day. When every competitor was chasing premium flyers, Ixigo built AI tools for train travelers in Tier 2 and 3 cities who nobody else was serving properly. That boring, unglamorous bet turned into a profitable IPO in June 2024 at a valuation above $500 million. Sometimes the right move is the one everyone else finds unexciting.

THE ORIGIN STORY

Aloke Bajpai and Rajnish Kumar launched Ixigo in 2007 out of Gurugram as a travel search aggregator. Bajpai came with an advantage — he had previously worked at Amadeus, the global travel technology company that powers much of the world's flight booking infrastructure.

He understood the industry's plumbing better than most. Early Ixigo was a meta-search engine for comparing prices across airlines and booking sites.

But the insight that changed everything came when they started looking seriously at rail travel, which no startup in India wanted to touch. The IRCTC system — India's government railway booking platform — was notoriously difficult to integrate with and unglamorous by any measure.

Everyone ignored it. Bajpai and Kumar saw 22 million daily passengers and a product that genuinely needed improvement.

They built for that market, and the market responded.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

Ixigo earns commissions from train, flight, bus, and hotel bookings completed through its app. For rail bookings, they integrate with IRCTC — India's official railway ticketing system — and charge a convenience fee per transaction.

They also earn advertising revenue from travel companies targeting their high-intent, high-frequency user base. Their AI-powered features — train PNR status predictions, waitlist confirmation probability scores, and delay forecasting — drive engagement and repeat usage that pure price comparison cannot replicate.

The business runs on volume: train tickets generate lower commission per transaction than flights, so Ixigo needs to process enormous booking volumes to generate meaningful revenue.

THE PRODUCTS

Ixigo Trains is their dominant product — the number one train booking app in India, used by hundreds of millions of rail passengers. Key features include real-time PNR status, waitlist prediction, train delay alerts, and seat availability tracking.

Ixigo Flights is their expanding flight booking platform. Ixigo Buses, operating through their AbBus platform, handles intercity bus bookings.

ConfirmTkt — acquired in 2021 — is a train booking app integrated into the Ixigo ecosystem, adding significant user base and booking volume.

HOW THEY GREW

While MakeMyTrip and Cleartrip fought over premium flyers, Ixigo went deep on rail and built genuinely useful AI features for the actual problems Indian train passengers face. The PNR prediction tool — which tells users how likely they are to get a confirmed seat from the waitlist — was the feature that drove explosive word-of-mouth.

It solved a real, daily problem for hundreds of millions of people in a way nobody had bothered to do. Ixigo grew to become India's number one train booking app by building things users actually needed, not things that looked impressive in press releases.

The 2021 acquisition of ConfirmTkt — another rail-focused travel app — consolidated their dominance in that segment.

THE HARD PART

Revenue mix and margin pressure. Train bookings generate significantly lower commission per transaction than flights, which means Ixigo needs enormous booking volumes to produce meaningful revenue.

The company has been pushing harder into flight and bus bookings to improve the revenue mix and margins, but those segments are more competitive and require more marketing spend to win customers. Scaling profitably in a high-volume, low-margin market while fighting MakeMyTrip for flight market share is the core ongoing tension in the business.
