Ashish Nagar left Amazon's Alexa team in 2019 because he kept staring at call centers and thinking a machine could do the boring parts. Level AI now listens to every customer call, scores the agents, and tells managers what is actually going wrong. Old-school QA teams used to sample 2% of calls and guess about the rest. Level AI grades all of them. It raised $73.1 million convincing investors the contact center was a goldmine everyone else ignored.

thelevel.aiTHE ORIGIN STORY
Ashish Nagar was an engineer on Amazon's Alexa conversational AI team. He spent his days teaching machines to understand human speech.
Then he noticed something. Contact centers were drowning in exactly that kind of data and doing almost nothing with it.
Agents handled millions of calls. Managers listened to a tiny handful and hoped the rest went fine.
Nagar left Amazon in 2019 to fix it. He started Level AI in Mountain View, California.
The pitch was simple. Use language models to understand every customer conversation, not just a random sample.
Battery Ventures bought the idea and led a $13 million Series A in 2021.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
Companies with big customer support teams pay Level AI a subscription. The software plugs into their phone and chat systems.
It transcribes every conversation and reads it in real time. Then it does three things.
It scores how well each agent handled the call. It coaches agents live while they are still talking to a customer.
And it spots trends across thousands of calls so managers know why people are angry. Support leaders pay for it because guessing about quality is expensive.
One bad pattern hiding across 10,000 calls costs real money.
THE PRODUCTS
The core product is an AI quality assurance system. It scores every customer call instead of the 2% a human team could realistically sample.
There is a CX Copilot that sits beside agents and suggests answers while they are on a live call. And there is an analytics layer that mines every conversation for patterns, so a support director can see why complaints spiked last week.
All of it runs on large language models tuned for the messy way people actually talk to support.
HOW THEY GREW
Level AI went after a boring problem the big software companies ignored. Quality assurance in contact centers was still done by humans listening to a few calls a week.
That is slow and it misses almost everything. Level AI sold the idea that AI could grade every single call automatically.
The timing helped. When ChatGPT made every executive suddenly care about AI in 2023, Level AI was already three years into building the exact thing they wanted.
Total funding jumped to $73.1 million by the 2024 Series C.
THE HARD PART
Level AI is crowded on all sides. Cresta, Observe.AI, and Forethought are all chasing the same contact center budget with a similar AI pitch.
The big platforms like Five9 and Genesys are also bolting AI onto their own products. So Level AI has to prove it is better, not just present.
There is a scarier threat too. The whole promise of this software is to make human agents better.
But if AI agents get good enough to replace those humans outright, Level AI is helping shrink its own market.

WHO BACKED THEM
Battery Ventures is the anchor. Partner Neeraj Agrawal led the Series A in 2021 and came back to lead the $20 million Series B in 2022.
Eniac Ventures and Village Global backed the company early. Adams Street Partners led the $39.4 million Series C in 2024, with Cross Creek and Brightloop joining in.
The repeat checks from Battery matter here. When your lead investor doubles down twice, other funds start paying attention.

Cresta
Cresta is Level AI's most direct rival. Both use AI to coach contact center agents live and grade every call. They chase the same enterprise support budgets.
Forethought
Forethought automates customer support with AI. Where Level AI grades and coaches human agents, Forethought leans toward deflecting tickets outright. Adjacent bets on the same shift in support.
