Otter.ai was transcribing meetings before it was cool. Founded in 2016, it had nearly a four-year head start on the AI meeting assistant wave that every major tech company is now scrambling to catch. Sam Liang left Google, built a real voice recognition product, and grew it quietly until the pandemic hit — then daily users exploded almost overnight. The product genuinely works. The competitive risk is real: Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams all now offer native transcription and summaries for free. Otter has to justify being a separate paid subscription when the platforms it sits on top of are catching up. It is a race the company has to keep winning every quarter.

otter.aiTHE ORIGIN STORY
Sam Liang spent years at Google working on voice and location technology. He left in 2016 with a clear thesis: voice recognition had gotten good enough to be genuinely useful for everyday note-taking, but no one had built the right consumer product around it.
Early Otter was used for transcribing interviews, lectures, and podcasts. The pandemic changed the game.
Remote work made meeting transcription a must-have overnight. Daily active users spiked in March 2020 and never came down.
Otter pivoted resources toward the meeting use case and has not looked back.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
Freemium SaaS. Free users get 300 minutes of transcription per month with limited features.
Otter Pro at $8.33 per month adds unlimited imports, advanced search, and speaker identification. Otter Business targets teams with shared workspaces, admin controls, and CRM integrations.
Revenue scales with seat count and usage depth inside organizations.
THE PRODUCTS
OtterPilot (AI meeting assistant that joins and takes notes automatically), Otter for Teams (shared workspace with searchable meeting archives), Otter for Education (university and K-12 lecture transcription), and the core Otter mobile app for iOS and Android.
HOW THEY GREW
Rode the remote-work wave aggressively. Partnered with Zoom early to offer built-in Otter transcription, which gave it distribution inside the platform everyone was using.
Launched OtterPilot — an AI that joins meetings automatically, takes notes, and generates summaries without any user action. Built deep integrations with HubSpot, Salesforce, and Dropbox.
University partnerships drove viral adoption in education as professors started recording lectures.
THE HARD PART
Commoditization from the platforms themselves. Zoom AI Companion, Google Meet transcription, and Microsoft Copilot all do essentially what Otter does, and they are bundled into subscriptions users already pay for.
Otter must be meaningfully better — not just comparable — to justify a separate bill. The window for building a durable moat is narrowing.

Grain
Grain and Otter.ai are the two most prominent standalone AI meeting tools. Otter focuses on real-time transcription and searchable archives. Grain focuses on clip extraction and sharing. They compete for the same meeting recording budget but with different core use cases.
Zoom
Zoom is simultaneously Otter.ai's most important distribution partner and its most dangerous competitor. Otter built deep Zoom integration to reach users at the point of meeting. Zoom then launched AI Companion with native transcription — making its biggest growth driver also its biggest threat.
