PERSONA

Netfigo Verdict
on Persona

Persona is the identity verification startup that realized the real problem was not the technology — it was that every company building KYC flows had to start from scratch. Persona built the infrastructure so they do not have to. Customers include DoorDash, Square, OpenSea, and Rippling, all using Persona to handle the business-critical but painfully unglamorous work of knowing who their users are. They raised $200 million in 2022 at a $1.5 billion valuation led by Founders Fund. The bet is that identity verification will be as commoditized as payment processing — and Persona intends to be the Stripe of KYC.

THE ORIGIN STORY

Rick Song and Charles Yeh founded Persona in San Francisco in 2018 after working at Amazon and Google respectively. Song had spent time on payments products and noticed a recurring pattern: every company building anything that required user verification was engineering the same KYC flow from scratch.

Collect a government-issued document. Run a biometric check.

Screen against sanctions lists. Store the results securely.

Pass the data to a compliance team. Repeat.

Persona's founding insight was to abstract that entire workflow into a configurable, no-code platform that compliance and product teams could build without custom engineering. The founding team ran lean, got to product-market fit before raising heavily, and focused relentlessly on developer experience — making Persona as easy to integrate as a payment widget.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

Persona charges on a usage basis — per completed identity verification flow. Clients configure their identity workflows on Persona's platform using a visual editor: which document types to accept, which biometric checks to run, which sanctions and adverse media lists to screen against, which decisions to automate and which to route to human review.

Persona orchestrates all of that through their infrastructure and returns structured results.

For companies that need ongoing monitoring — watching for changes in a verified user's status after initial onboarding — Persona offers continuous monitoring subscriptions. The more compliance complexity a client faces, the more valuable the platform becomes.

THE PRODUCTS

Persona's core product is an identity verification workflow builder — a visual, no-code editor where companies define what their KYC flow looks like, including document types, biometric requirements, and sanctions screening rules. Persona orchestrates the verification and returns results via API.

Additional products include Personas (persistent verified identity records), Case Management (a human review queue for edge cases), and Adverse Media screening (checking users against negative news sources). The platform covers the full identity lifecycle from onboarding through ongoing monitoring.

HOW THEY GREW

Persona grew by targeting the developer-first segment of the KYC market. Traditional KYC vendors sold to compliance officers and legal teams through long enterprise sales cycles.

Persona built APIs and documentation that engineering teams loved and could evaluate independently — making identity verification as easy to try as integrating a third-party payment gateway.

The developer-first approach got them inside fast-moving companies like DoorDash, Square, and crypto platforms before compliance stakeholders even knew a vendor decision had been made. Product-led growth meant low initial customer acquisition costs and fast iteration based on real usage.

The Founders Fund investment in 2022 also opened doors across Peter Thiel's extended network of high-growth startups.

THE HARD PART

The identity verification market is becoming crowded at the enterprise end. Socure, Trulioo, Jumio, and Onfido all compete for the same compliance budgets.

Persona's edge is configurability and developer experience, but as those competitors improve their tooling and documentation, the differentiation narrows. There is also a deeper structural challenge: if KYC verification becomes a true commodity, it competes on price.

Persona needs to keep adding higher-value services — advanced fraud detection, ongoing monitoring, behavioral analytics — to stay out of the commodity tier and protect its margins.

WHO BACKED THEM

Founders Fund led the $200 million Series C in March 2022, valuing Persona at $1.5 billion. Index Ventures led the earlier Series B in 2021.

Founders Fund — Peter Thiel's firm — rarely leads identity infrastructure deals, making the investment notable and providing Persona access to a network of high-growth startups that cluster around Thiel's ecosystem. Earlier investors include First Round Capital and Coatue.
