The difference is that European labor law is about 10x more complicated than American labor law, so Personio has to handle things like German works councils and French 35-hour weeks. Hanno Renner was a student at the Center for Digital Technology and Management in Munich. He noticed that small and medium European businesses had no good HR software options — American products didn’t understand European labor laws, and legacy European products were outdated and ugly.
He founded Personio in 2015 with a focus on the German market, then expanded across Europe. The product handled Germany’s notoriously complex employment regulations from day one, which gave Personio credibility in other European markets.
